The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Library Assistant at the Berkeley Public Library. In this role, you would have the opportunity to assist with the opening and closing procedures of the library, shelving materials, shelf reading, and assisting patrons with digital library resources and databases, additional customer service skills, engaging with the community in a friendly library setting, and provide support with library events and outreach, and opportunities to work on system-wide work groups.

Currently, we have one part-time 30-hour Library Assistant at our Tarea Hall Pitman South Branch.

Candidates must also be able to work evenings and weekends.Application must be received by March 23, 2026, at 5:00 pm PST, unless we reach the 150 max candidates, and must include a completed application and resume. In-Person Performance Exam (Tentatively scheduled for April 8, April 9, and April 10; but may be scheduled earlier if we reach 150 candidates before the close date)

Tests may consist of any combination of written, oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification. The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews slated for a date to be determined.
