CLASS DEFINITION

Performs a variety of skilled technical work, maintaining hardware and software configurations, providing user support, performs other duties relating to the total computerized information systems.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey-level class in the professional Information Systems series. This class is distinguished from the Information Systems Manager by the level of responsibility and technical tasks required in administering the City's Information Systems and is performed under general supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general supervision from the Information Systems Manager.ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Provides support for the City's computer workstations and telephones; works with computer workstation and phone system users to resolve problems and answer questions on a variety of hardware and software components.

• Installs and configures new computer workstations and software; installs network components; such as monitors, work stations and cables; develops and maintains assigned computer systems; installs and troubleshoots terminals and cables.

• Participates in the maintenance and repair of all computer workstation hardware systems, including printers, file servers, communication servers, voicemail systems, telephones, and related equipment.

• Provides emergency response to reduce downtime, correct errors or monitor vendor activity surrounding critical system failures, off-hours scheduled maintenance downtime or work on call on an as needed basis.

OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES

• Assists with the development, coordination and scheduling of in-house training, computer user and new user training, and assists with the preparation and conducting of demonstrations and training of new applications.

• Assists with maintaining service and inventory records relating to Information Systems in the City.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Graduation from High School or equivalent.
College level coursework in computer science, management information systems or a related field is highly desirable.

EXPERIENCE

Two years of responsible technical experience involving personal computers, installation, software loading and configurations as well as hardware installation and setup.
At least one year qualifying experience spent in direct support of a medium size to large installed base of personal computer users running under a Microsoft Windows environment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE LEVELS

City government operations; database concepts; government services automation principles.
Modern office methods, procedures, and equipment requirements.
Principles of computerized information management and data processing systems.
Microcomputer hardware and software operations and maintenance.
Microsoft Windows 10, Microsoft Windows 11 desktop operating systems.
Microsoft Windows Server 2016 and 2019 to 2025 operating systems.
Microsoft Office 365 Professional applications (Word, Excel Power Point, Access and Outlook).
Local Area Networking operations and maintenance.
Internet usage and web site maintenance.
Networking hardware such as switches and routers.
Prepare written reports, instructions, memos or newsletter articles.
Follow oral instructions, work with minimal supervision to accomplish goals and objectives and complete assigned projects on time.
Plan effectively, prioritize requests and assignments and meet deadlines.

REQUISITE ABILITIES

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, City officials and the public.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Use independent judgment to identify and resolve problems without supervision

LICENSE REQUIRED

Must possess a valid California driver's license - Class C, and be able to drive a City vehicle.

PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is primarily performed in an office environment requiring prolonged sitting or standing; walking, kneeling, crouching, squatting, stooping and bending; input data into a computer terminal; exposure to computer glare, vibrations and pitch; ability to lift, carry and move objects totaling approximately 50 pounds in weight; and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
