What You Will Typically Be Responsible For

Helping the public process Return-to-owner transactions, adoptions, the intake of stray animals, and many other transactions on the computer
Assisting the public with the information and resources needed on animal-related problems or issues
Taking calls from the public, answering questions regarding laws, ordinances, animals at the shelter, reclaiming their pets, and numerous other questions that may arise
Communicate and contact owners through email and provide information and resources for keeping their pets or rehoming. Also, if necessary, process a surrender and complete the necessary paperwork
Handling dog license sales
Varying schedules Monday-Sunday with a bid process and possible overtime
Handling spay, neuter, and vaccine clinics

Experience

Minimum Qualifications

Either,

Six (6) months of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) clerical or customer service experience in one of the following areas:
a City or County animal shelter, Humane Society or other agencies or businesses providing animal care and control which must have included direct public contact while providing services that include but are not limited to animal adoption, licensing, surrender services; or
a veterinary hospital, boarding kennel or veterinary practice which must have included direct public contact providing information and consultation regarding entities' rules, regulations and operational procedures.

OR,

Six (6) months of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) animal care and control experience and six (6) months of clerical or public engagement experience.

Other Requirements: The ability to type at a speed of not less than 40 words per minute from clear manuscript or printed or typewritten copy.

Desirable Qualifications

Extensive spay, neuter, vaccine knowledge
Extensive knowledge of animal laws
Knowledge of Chameleon and/or Clinic HQ software

Selection Process

Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application. Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
Online Multiple-Choice Assessment: Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the Online Multiple-Choice Assessment. The Online Multiple-Choice Assessment will measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. These may include but are not limited to reading comprehension, mathematical facility, attention to detail, and customer focus.(Weighted 100%).
Multiple Choice Test: Tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) in the week of April 20, 2026.

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

CONVICTION HISTORY

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
