The City of Farmington is seeking a dynamic and compassionate Animal Welfare Director to lead and oversee the operations of the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter. This position is responsible for managing shelter operations, staff, animal care, and public relations, with a strong focus on improving the live release rate of animals.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Supervision:
- Manage and supervise all Animal Services division staff, including recruitment, training, evaluation, and discipline.
- Develop work plans, oversee performance, and create a collaborative and effective team environment.
Animal Welfare & Shelter Operations:
- Ensure the health, wellness, and humane treatment of all shelter animals.
- Perform daily rounds to monitor animal health and flow through the shelter system to reduce length of stay.
- Oversee euthanasia programs and maintain compliance with state licensing and drug control regulations.
Strategic Planning & Data Analysis:
- Develop and implement short- and long-term goals for the shelter.
- Analyze data to identify gaps, assess program effectiveness, and report outcomes to stakeholders.
Public Relations & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Serve as the liaison between the shelter, Farmington Police Department, and Animal Control Officers.
- Respond to media and public inquiries, represent the city at community meetings, and maintain strong relationships with volunteers, fosters, and rescue organizations.
Regulatory Compliance & Budget Management:
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to animal control and shelter operations.
- Prepare budgets, supervise purchasing, and maintain responsibility for shelter equipment.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Strong leadership and team-building skills.
- Expertise in public administration, animal sciences, and shelter management.
- Ability to interpret and apply codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- Experience in budget preparation, data analysis, and program development.
- Excellent customer service and public relations abilities.
- Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and problem-solve effectively.
Requirements:
- State of New Mexico euthanasia certification (or ability to obtain).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle for city business.
- Thorough understanding of animal welfare, shelter operations, and public administration principles.
