Boulder County Coroner's department is seeking to hire an hourly
Coroner Technician - Family Assistance.
Position Summary And Primary Responsibilities
The Hourly Coroner Technician position is a support position primarily serving the Family Assistance Coordinator within the Family Assistance Unit. The Hourly Coroner Technician is responsible for providing support services and resources to those who have lost a loved one due to a sudden or unexpected death. The Hourly Coroner Technician is responsible for coordinating death investigation information and assists families in understanding the role of the coroner in the death of their loved one.
This position also performs a variety of administrative and analytical duties.
Scope Of Interpersonal Contacts
The Hourly Coroner Technician is a representative of the Coroner's Office and is involved in a myriad of interpersonal contacts. Such contacts require a high degree of interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, tact, discretion, etiquette, and good judgment.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Knowledge of medico legal policy and procedures and Colorado Revised Statues pertaining to the Coroner.
Knowledge of forensic investigation and interviewing techniques and practices, chain of custody, death certificate processes, and probable causes of death under a wide variety of circumstances.
Skill in providing comfort and assistance to those grieving a loss.
Skill in professionally and effectively engaging in difficult conversations and conflict resolution communicating in a clear and concise way when in stressful situations, when conversing with personnel, bereaved family members and stakeholders.
Skill in basic document preparation, formal report writing, and business letter writing.
Skill in written and verbal communication requiring information to be expressed in an understanding and empathetic way when working with bereaved family members and the public.
Ability to maintain professional composure and communicate and work effectively with County staff, bereaved families, law enforcement officials, pathologists, physicians, lawyers, emergency room personnel, and the general public.
Ability to function successfully in high stress situations and implement effective courses of action and draw appropriate conclusions.
Ability to use modern office equipment including computer equipment, and operate computer programs such as Microsoft Office 365, to include Microsoft Word, Access Database, Excel, Power Point and other software applications.
This is an
hourly position that will work 25-29 hours per week. This position will work varying hours,
Monday - Friday from 7:00am - 5pm. This position will work at
5610 Flatiron Parkway in Boulder, CO.
Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.
Hiring Salary Range: $24.04 hourly
Tentative Hiring Timeline

Examples of Duties
- Assist the Family Assistance Coordinator with family assistance related administrative support tasks including case data tracking, updating resources and informational documents/brochures, drafting next of kin correspondence, and participate in community outreach as it relates to family assistance, including attending monthly meetings advocacy/grief related meetings.
- Act as a support to grieving families either by phone, email, or in person. Create space, listen, provide empathy, and show compassion.
- Act as a direct point of contact to the bereaved: answer questions and provide guidance, make referrals.
- Develop and maintain working relationships with various mental health resources, mortuaries, law enforcement agencies as well as other service partners.
- Collaborate with the investigations and pathology units on cases; attend daily case briefing meetings to flag cases for Family Assistance follow up.
- Field general inquiries about the Coroner’s Office operations via phone, email, and in-person interactions to bereaved persons and the general public.
- Operate office equipment such as personal computers, photocopiers, scanners, and other related devices.
- Invoice data entry.
- Supply inventory management.
- Document management.
Additional Duties
- Proficiently use virtual meeting platforms such as Teams, Zoom, and Webex.
- Proficient use of Microsoft office programs including Outlook, and Excel.
- Adapt to varying situations with the public and service partners.
- Provide specific information on the responsibilities of the Coroner’s Office as needed.
- Help maintain clean and organized common work areas.
- Assist in managing clerical organization during mass fatalities disasters.
- Performs related work, as required.
- May be reassigned during emergency situations.

Education & Experience
Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of
A bachelor's degree, or 90-120 higher education hours with a concentration in a human service field* from a nationally accredited college or university, and a minimum of six months experience in an advocacy role.**
OR
An associate's degree, or 60-90 higher education hours with a concentration in a human service field* from a nationally accredited college or university, and a minimum of one year experience in an advocacy role.**
OR
A high school diploma or GED equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience in an advocacy role.**
- Human service field such as Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Human Behavior, Mental Health, or a closely related field.
- All relevant experience, regardless of tier, must have been worked within the last three years.
Driver's License

Supplemental Information
Preferred Qualificaitons
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Experience working with or for a coroner or medical examiner's office, or other related experience such as a mortuary, law enforcement, health care, mental health, social work, etc.
- Experience working with bereaved families in the loss of a loved one.
- ABMDI certified death investigator or able to obtain certification within one year.
