- Building Inspector I: $33.43 - $43.45 per hour (depending upon qualifications)
- Building Inspector II: $40.31- $52.40 per hour (depending upon qualifications) *If an applicant qualifies for a Building Inspector II position, they may be considered for a Building Inspector II position. See below for Building Inspector II qualifications.

- Located at Eden Prairie City Center (8080 Mitchell Road Eden Prairie, MN 55344), travels to inspection sites.
- Typical hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; varies based on business need
Responsibilities
The Building Inspector supports the Building Division to ensure standards are established by the code to ensure compliance and safeguard, life, limb, health, property, and public welfare in the City of Eden Prairie. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:
- Performs field inspections to ensure compliance with the code and construction standards.
- Reviews and interprets blueprints and specifications submitted for building permits for new construction, alterations, additions, demolitions, repairs, and maintenance. Works with contractors and owners to achieve code compliant projects.
- Fields phone calls, meets with contractors, architects, job superintendents, and homeowners to discuss building and other code issues; discusses need with clients and renders accurate interpretations.
- Maintains an effective working relationship with inspections department staff and other department staff members to ensure positive outcome.
- Maintains technical proficiencies of construction and other applicable codes; researches new and/or alternative materials and construction practices for potential approval.
- Assists in developing various department information handouts to assist in educating contractors, homeowners, architects, and property owners on various regulatory codes to ensure their thorough understanding and conformance when applied to their building projects; assists in developing various department inspection check sheets for field inspectors to use when performing daily inspections and for contractors and job superintendents to use as check list to check for prior scheduling of their inspections.

Requirements
- Building Inspector I qualifications: Associates degree or two-year technical certificate preferred, Building Inspection Technology (BIT) program preferred. A minimum of three years of related experience in a recognized trade, building inspections, architecture and/or engineering. State Building Official-Limited Certification/License preferred (and required within two years of employment); Experience in both residential and commercial construction preferred; Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required; experience with LOGIS Permit Information Management System (PIMS) preferred. A valid drivers license and excellent driving record required.
- Building Inspector II qualifications: Technical certificate (BIT or trade related) or bachelors degree in a related field (such as construction) and three years of related experience a recognized trade, building inspections, architecture and/or engineering required or a minimum of five years of related experience in a recognized trade, building inspections, architecture and/or engineering. State Building Official-Limited Certification/License required; State Building Official Certification/License required (or ability to obtain within the first one year of employment); Commercial building inspections experience including experience with complex properties or building projects required; experience with multi-family residential housing units preferred; mechanical experience preferred; delegation agreement with Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry preferred. At least two years of experience utilizing computer technology preferred. A valid drivers license and excellent driving record required.
- Inspectors often work with tight inspection schedules generally being allotted 30 minutes including travel time to perform a thorough and accurate inspection. Inspectors are required to take appropriate safety precautions and wear protective gear. Most work is performed in a field environment. Inspectors spend a portion of each day in a vehicle with frequent exiting and entering. There is often exposure to traffic and moving construction equipment. Working conditions include wet, muddy, slippery, dusty and windy conditions. At times there may be intermittent exposure to very disagreeable working conditions. Inspectors must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding, walk on uneven surfaces with occasional lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 50 pounds.
- The City of Eden Prairie conducts the following pre-employment checks for this position: professional reference checks; background check; education and work history verification; driver's license check (must have valid driver's license and excellent driving record). All final candidates must successfully complete and pass the Citys evaluation of the pre-employment process before their first day of employment.
