SUMMARY - An employee in this position uses manual labor to perform semi-skilled tasks of a physically demanding nature in an assigned area of responsibility. Assigned areas can include collection of litter and trash in parks and right-of-ways as well as construction maintenance and repair activities to parks; mowing trimming planting pruning maintaining trees and landscaping. The work is performed under close and direct supervision. Individuals in this position are automatically promoted to Laborer II after six months of satisfactory performance with no pending discipline and no serious disciplinary actions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Performs full range of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work including grass mowing ball field maintenance snow removal weeding planting and trash removal. Performs minor building maintenance and equipment maintenance including mower maintenance. Participates with a crew on maintenance projects. Performs minor custodial work including trash removal sweeping and mopping. Ensures proper documentation to include advising supervisors of issues with and condition of vehicles and equipment. Operates various hand and power tools and related maintenance equipment including but not limited chain saws circular saws drills and weed trimmers. Cleans and restores construction areas job sites and other project areas including repairing or replacing landscaping disturbed during construction projects. Plants prunes and maintains trees and other plantings; removes trees and pruning debris as directed. Maintains workshops and storage areas in a clean and orderly condition including cleaning and securing tools and equipment at the close of the workday. Assists in performance of preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Assists with weather related emergencies pertaining to parks and facilities i.e. snow and ice removal cleanup after storms etc. Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems. Acts as part of the Emergency Operations Team during severe weather events or emergency situations. Willingly and cooperatively accepts other duties and responsibilities as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES - None. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - The minimum eligibility requirements for this position are as follows: MINIMUM AGE - 18 years. Must be in good physical condition to perform manual tasks and have the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE -Possession of a high school diploma or GED Certificate or one year of related experience in refuse collection or roadway maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the essential requirements of work. CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS - Must possess a Maryland Class "C" driver's license or a comparable driver's license issued by the employee's state of residence and a proven safe driving record. Must possess or be able to acquire the following certifications in the Incident Command System (ICS) within 6 months of employment: ICS-100 and IS-700.
