Salary Civil Engineer III: $75,000 - $85,000
Salary Civil Engineer IV: $80,000 - $90,000

Role Summary
Civil Engineer III: Assignments require independent evaluation, selection, and application of standard civil engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria in order to make adaptations and modifications to existing plans or specifications. Performance at this level requires a professional civil engineer, competent in conventional aspects of civil engineering. May coordinate the work of engineers, draftspersons, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.
Civil Engineer IV: The knowledge and expertise required for this level of work results from progressive experience. Assignments require the application of intensive and diversified knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices. Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods and represents the City in public meetings and conferences to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work. Requires the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of sciences and disciplines. Coordinates the work of consultants, contractors and staff assigned to the project.
Civil Engineer III/IV Essential Duties:
Under general supervision from the City Engineer the incumbent will perform civil engineering design, construction contract administration and traffic engineering.
- Responsible for managing the design and construction of Capital Improvement Projects for the City of Ann Arbor, which typically include roads, sidewalks, water distribution, storm water control and conveyance, best management practices for design of Green Streets Infrastructure, and sanitary sewage conveyance.
- Work includes public engagement, construction management, contract management (for both construction and engineering contracts), coordination with other City departments and outside organizations, engineering design and review, standards development, directing survey work and inspections, budgeting, and use of various engineering software applications.
Education, Training and Experience Required at Entry
Civil Engineer III:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited four-year college or university
- A minimum of five years of full-time civil engineering experience, if a Professional Licensed Engineer in the State of Michigan
- A minimum of eight years of full-time civil engineering experience, if has passed the Fundamental-in-Engineering (FE) exam
Civil Engineer IV:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited four-year college or university
- Professional Engineering License in the State of Michigan or the ability to obtain one in less than six months from the date of hire.
- Minimum of eight years of progressive civil engineering and project management practice

- Fundamental-in-Engineering (FE), or Professional Engineering License (PE)
- Valid Driver’s License
Civil Engineer IV:
- Professional Engineering License (PE)
- Valid Driver’s License
