This is an entry-level position in the Building Division of the Community Planning and Sustainable Development Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)
Although Charged With Enforcing Compliance With Douglas County’s Adopted Codes And Regulations, The Incumbent Must Do So In Accordance With The County’s Policy That Emphasizes Obtaining Compliance Over Punitive Enforcement, Using The Latter As a Last Resort. Therefore, The Incumbent Must Use All His/her Knowledge, Tact, Resources And Ingenuity To Educate And Assist Customers To Achieve Compliance With Applicable County Codes, Resolutions, Policies And Statutory Regulations. Further, The Incumbent
Inspects primarily single and multi-family residential buildings for compliance with building codes during all phases of construction, alteration, and repair.
Inspects new and/or existing plumbing systems and equipment in residential structures for conformance with applicable codes. Verifies tests for proper function and usage.
Inspects heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems in single and multi-family residential structures for conformance with applicable building codes. Inspects steam and hot water systems, furnaces, heat exchangers, prefabricated and field-built fireplaces, and related equipment for proper code compliant installation, functioning and safety.
Inspects multi-family dwellings for compliance with Colorado Title IX and Building Code accessibility requirements per design specifications.
Answers questions from homeowners and contractors related to various codes.
Investigates complaints. Provides customer service by defining problems and working towards solutions.
Works to protect the County’s liability for improper workmanship and code violations. Protects businesses and homeowners from improper workmanship.
Reads maps and organizes inspection route to achieve 100% completion of requested inspections on a daily basis. Often schedules inspection times with homeowners to accommodate their schedules.
May be called upon to respond at
any time to an emergency. Fires, weather, or other damaging events may require an on-site inspection to determine the extent of damage and whether occupancy shall be restricted.
Keeps current and informed of new construction methods, materials and safety procedures and national, state and local codes, interpretations and regulations.
Assists in developing local amendments and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- A high school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of four years construction related experience
- A combination of education and experience in the following areas may be considered:
- Customer service experience, including public contact and complaint resolution
- Construction estimation or design
- Installation, maintenance, and/or repair of building systems
- Regulatory interpretation or compliance
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
- Possess one nationally recognized certification or obtain within one year of hire.
- Other ICC or recognized certifications are highly desirable.
