DEFINITION: Under the direction of the Director of Communications, performs a wide variety of complex clerical and technical tasks to support the District's strategic communication plan and promote District, school, and student successes to internal and external audiences; performs independent duties to relieve the supervisor of administrative details; assists in the planning, creation, and dissemination of District communication materials; assists in the planning and management of District special events and programs; processes news media and community inquiries; monitors and tracks news and social media activity; conducts research and prepares reports related to communication activities; gathers information and responds to requests for information

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Any combination of education (minimum Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred) and experience that would demonstrate possession of knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Experience: Associate's degree from a recognized college in Journalism, Mass Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Broadcasting, or related field. Minimum of two years' experience in a communications field or public agency including clerical experience and experience using desktop publishing, videography, photography, or social media for professional purposes. Knowledge of: Current trends and issues in California public schools. Familiarity of local media landscape preferred. Functions and operations of an administrative office. Telephone techniques and etiquette. District organization, operations, policies and objectives. Applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations. Financial record-keeping and budget report preparation techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Oral and written communication skills. Operation of a computer and assigned software such as Adobe Pro, Word, Excel, Power Point, Google Drive, Canva, Smore, iMovie. Methods of collecting and organizing data and information. Business letter and report writing techniques. Photography and videography. Basic public relations and media relations techniques. Social media etiquette for professional use. Ability to: Perform complex secretarial and administrative assistance duties to relieve the administrator of administrative detail. Organize, coordinate and oversee office activities. Understand and resolve issues, complaints or problems. Exercise appropriate judgment in making decisions. Work independently with little direction. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Compose correspondence and written materials independently or from oral instructions. Assure efficient and timely completion of office and departmental projects and activities. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Interpret, apply and explain laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Type or input data at an acceptable rate of speed. Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and assigned software. Maintain financial and statistical records. Maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information. Drive a vehicle. Operate special media equipment, such as a camera. Compile and verify data and prepare reports. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
