- QUALIFIED CANDIDATES ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY IMMEDIATELY THIS CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT WARNING***** Under general direction, to perform literal and general interpretation and translation duties in Superior Court proceedings and interviews requiring fluency in English and a foreign language; to translate documents and correspondence. This classification performs duties as an interpreter in the courtroom and in other legal proceedings. Individuals appointed to this classification must be certified as a Court Interpreter in the State of California.
Essential Functions
- Performs courtroom interpretation as assigned, by interpreting simultaneously and consecutively during arraignments, preliminary hearings, motions, trials, cross examination, questions and answers, and instructions from English to a foreign language and vice versa;
- Administers oaths to witnesses;
- Interprets and translates technical, medical, legal and other documents, written evidence and correspondence for court and related personnel;
- May translate court forms and documents for use and distribution by staff;
- Explains routine court procedures for foreign language speaking persons in court;
- Receives and reviews documents for filing and checks for legal compliance;
- Interprets at the counter and over the telephone.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid certificate as a Court Interpreter in the State of California.
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License at the time of appointment.

Selection Procedures
– Knowledge of legal terminology; courtroom procedures; correct usage of grammar, spelling and punctuation of English and appropriate foreign language; interpreting techniques and ethics; and legal clerical office practices, procedures and policies.
– Ability to speak, read and write fluently in English and appropriate foreign language; accurately translate orally and in writing, in English and appropriate foreign language; comprehend and retain dialogue in both languages at the same rate and in the same manner consistent with courtroom procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, attorneys, witnesses, and other court personnel; learn and apply a variety of superior court procedures and practices; and follow written and oral instructions.
