This hands-on position involves fueling, cleaning, and performing routine maintenance on city vehicles, as well as assisting mechanics and handling general labor tasks at the maintenance facility. Salary will increase to $25.98 per hour after completion of the six-month probationary period.
Key Responsibilities
- Vehicle Cleaning and Maintenance: Clean city vehicles, including buses, cutaways, vans, support vehicles, and other assets as assigned. Perform preventive maintenance tasks on City vehicles and equipment.
- Fueling and Fluid Checks: Fuel city vehicles and check fluid levels for buses, cutaways, vans, support vehicles, and other assets as assigned.
- Assistance and General Labor: Assist Transit Fleet Mechanics as needed. Perform general labor tasks at the transit fleet maintenance facility.
- Reporting and Documentation: Prepare and maintain standard repair and maintenance work reports.
Needed Knowledge & Skills
Technical Knowledge:
- Knowledge of practices, procedures, materials, and equipment used in transit fleet maintenance and repair work.
- Knowledge of standard manual work tools.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public, including in challenging situations.
Physical Abilities:
- Physical strength and agility to perform strenuous manual tasks for extended periods.
- Capability to work under adverse weather conditions.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in custodial or general laborer work or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licensing Requirements:
- Possess, or obtain with six months, a valid Illinois Class "B" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Health and Safety Compliance:
- Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.
- Ability to pass pre-employment and random Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol testing.
