Position Details

The City of Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation Department seeks a Special Projects Art Intern to assist primarily in researching and updating documents related to the City’s public art collection, art grants, and art programming records and files. The selected intern would work directly with the Arts Program Supervisor.

Primary Duties


The Art Intern will support our Arts & Events division by assisting in the development and execution of art projects. This internship provides hands-on experience in supporting artists, coordinating events, and contributing to public art initiatives. The ideal candidate is passionate about the arts, organized, and eager to gain practical experience in art project management and community engagement.

Your primary duties in this role will include:

  • Meet and discuss overall project plan with Arts Program Supervisor, Allison Hyde
  • 1% for Public Art – Policy Review, Policy comparisons from other organizations, and suggested re-writes that will be presented to arts staff and then the Auburn Arts Commission.
  • Public Art inventory: review, make updates to Excel spreadsheet as needed, insurance notations and cross references, and possibly establishing and/or adding to a GIS database for that information with IT to improve accessibility of information to City and community
  • Public Art Policies and Procedures – research and draft revisions to public art policies and processes, including but not limited to public art, murals, etc.
  • Future Programming Plan – inquire other art agencies for list of classes for basement; and/or plan for future outdoor programming idea and scope for alleyway and park events and art experiences.
  • Report progress during project to Arts Program Supervisor
  • Other arts related projects and duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for this internship opportunity, you must be:

  • Pursuing an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in arts disciplines, including but not limited to visual arts, arts administration, arts education, art galleries, art museums, exhibition installation, performing arts, literary arts, or a related field; or obtained in the last 12 months. 
  • Enrolled in, or have successfully completed, visual arts, arts administration, arts education, art galleries, art museums, exhibition installation, performing arts, or literary arts college course. 
  • Must be very detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Must be able to take direction and also work independently
  • Must have a working knowledge of how to use Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel
  • Must be a clear and professional communicator via email or phone
  • Must be timely and reliable for scheduled work times


To be the most successful, you also need to:

  • Ideal applicants will have a background and interest in the arts, especially arts administration, museum studies or public art management
  • Ideal applicants will enjoy a casual and friendly work environment within Parks, Arts & Rec.

We are asking for a commitment through our 10-week program, fromJune 16th - August 22nd. Preference will be given to candidates that are available to work up to 40 hours per week throughout the program. If you are a top candidate, your availability and assigned schedule will be discussed with you before moving into the background check process. 

Our core business hours are Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm, with an hour for lunch. We are physically in the office every day, and you will have an assigned desk with a City issued computer! This position is not eligible for remote work, so you must be able to commit to being onsite to be considered for this role.

The pay rates for this position will be offered as follows:

Freshman & Sophomores: Step 1 - $19.42

Juniors & Seniors: Step 2 - $20.95

Postgraduates: Step 3 - $22.48

Temporary positions are not eligible to receive City benefits; however, WA Paid Sick Leave (WPSL) is issued at 0.025 hours per 40 hours worked, as required by law.
