Nature of Work

Prepares, mixes, and serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and prepackaged concession items to guests for theater events. Provides professional levels of quality, safety, and customer service. 

Environmental Factors

Work is performed at various venues, events, and locations; may be exposed to various weather conditions at outside venues; exposure to cleaning chemicals; exposure to individuals under the influence of alcohol. 


Physical Factors 

Moderate physical requirements, with risk of burns and cuts; standing and walking for long periods of time; frequent bending, reaching, and stooping; lifting, carrying, and moving items weighing up to thirty (30) pounds. 


Work Situation Factors 

Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, frequent work beyond normal business hours, working special events and holidays and responding to customer issues.   Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services.  Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

This position is graded CN05.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares, mixes, and serves alcoholic beverages in compliance with all State of New Mexico laws and regulations; follows and adheres to all safety and compliance requirements for service of alcohol and other items.
  • Takes and records beverage orders from servers and guests; handles cash and credit or debit card transactions; collects and accounts for transactions.
  • Performs a variety of cleaning and sanitation activities to maintain a safe and clean environment; monitors the status of all preparation areas, equipment, glassware, and utensils.
  • Prepares garnishes, replenishes snacks, and assists in the restocking of bar inventory and supplies; stores supplies received in accordance with applicable regulations and safety requirements to ensure items received are not subject to spoilage.
  • Provides support to other staff as needed and directed; sets up, opens, and closes bar areas; assists with set-up and break down of banquets and special events.

Minimum Qualifications

No specific educational or experience requirement. Prior experience in bartending, serving, and related activities may be preferred.   A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy. 

Licenses/Certification(s):
Applicant must have a current New Mexico alcohol server's permit.  Must be at least 21 years of age.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:  methods of handling and preparing food and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for concession sales; common drink recipes, beer, wine, and liquor types; food and beverage handling safety and sanitation practices; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards; practices and methods used in food and beverage preparation and storage; customer service principles, standards, and methods; effective communication and techniques for appropriate interaction with customers; principles of cash handling, cashiering, and record keeping; business and personal computers, and applicable software applications; City organization, operations, policies and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position. 

Ability to:  perform a variety of duties and responsibilities timely and with accuracy; maintain high standards of cleanliness and meet required sanitation procedures; provide appropriate levels of customer service to ensure guests have a pleasant experience; read, communicate, and comply with policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing related activities, programs, and functions; communicate effectively in verbal and written forms; establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and the public; use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines to successfully meet established goals and objectives. 

Skills in:  enforcing liquor laws and ordinances tactfully; beverage preparation techniques, procedures, and mixology; safely and effectively using, operating, and maintaining relevant kitchen tools and equipment; effectively communicating and exercising courtesy and respect in frequent interactions with customers; operating basic office equipment, personal computers, and related software; mathematical aptitude; maintaining complete and accurate records; using independent judgment and personal initiative; assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
