Position Information: The Assistant Public Works Director is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing and directing the Water Division, Sewer Division, Water Filtration Division, Street Maintenance Division, Traffic Division, Stormwater Division, and River Cities Transit within the City of Longview’s Public Works Department. This position plays a critical role in infrastructure planning, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency, ensuring that essential public services are delivered safely, effectively, and sustainably to residents, businesses, and visitors.
The Assistant Public Works Director works closely with the Public Works Director, City Manager, City Council, and other local, state, and federal agencies to develop and implement policies, programs, and projects that enhance the city’s transportation, utilities, and environmental infrastructure. This position provides strategic leadership, budgetary oversight, and technical guidance for the planning, construction, maintenance, and operation of the city’s critical infrastructure systems.
Additionally, the Assistant Public Works Director fosters a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement within the department, ensuring that staff members are well-trained, motivated, and equipped to handle the city’s growing infrastructure needs. The role requires strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to address complex public works challenges, such as aging infrastructure, environmental sustainability, emergency preparedness, and transportation system enhancements.
This position also serves as a key liaison between the City and the community, stakeholders, and partner agencies, representing the Public Works Department in public meetings, legislative discussions, and regional initiatives. The Assistant Public Works Director is expected to be proactive in seeking funding opportunities, optimizing resources, and integrating emerging technologies to improve service delivery and long-term infrastructure resilience.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, public administration, business administration or related field; AND 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in public works, infrastructure management or a related field, including supervisory experience OR a combination of education, training and experience which would provide the required skills, knowledge, and ability to perform the job as determined by the department.
- Experience in municipal government operations and regulatory compliance preferred.
- Certifications related to water, wastewater, stormwater, or transportation systems are desirable.
