The City of Ithaca is seeking an experienced and strategic leader to serve as the Superintendent of Public Works. The Superintendent of Public Works leads the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of municipal infrastructure. This leadership role ensures compliance with fiscal, sustainability, and equity goals while managing public works operations, including streets, water, sewer, drainage, flood control, waste management, and city facilities.
Department Breakdown: 3 Divisions, ~150 staff, ~$25m budget
- Engineering Services: Engineering Support, Flood Mitigation, Permitting, Sidewalk Program
- Streets & Facilities: Parks & Forestry, Street & Facility Maintenance, Waste Management
- Water & Sewer: Geographic Information System, Wastewater Treatment Facility, Water Treatment Plant
Salary & Benefits:
- Salary Range: $125,000 - $150,000

Some Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a professional team, handling recruitment, training, and performance management.
- Develop and implement infrastructure plans aligned with city policies and budgetary constraints.
- Prepare and oversee annual department and capital budgets, reviewing expenditures and resource allocation.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and oversee contract management.
- Develop and recommend public works ordinances and policies for City Council consideration.
- Engage with stakeholders, respond to public concerns, and collaborate with public and private entities on infrastructure projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and eight years of street construction, or related large scale construction, or municipal public works experience, three years of which shall have been in a responsible supervisory or administrative capacity; or
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and twelve years of street construction, large scale construction or municipal public works experience, at least three years of which shall have been in a responsible supervisory or administrative capacity; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience defined by the limits of (1) and (2) above.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Engineering (PE) License in New York State
- Master's Degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related fields
Exam Requirements: Civil Service Exam is required for this position
