As a senior IT Desktop Specialist, you will provide technical assistance and support for end-user computer systems, particularly desktop and laptop computers, to users in a specific county location. Your role is integral to the team, as you will be embedded in the customer’s area, developing a close working relationship with the users. You will often be the most prominent or single point of contact for users who need IT assistance. Your feedback on end-user needs and communication of policies and procedures for proper use of the county’s computing environment is highly valued.
This position is assigned to the Administration Center and supports staff in multiple departments at this location, this includes the Office of the County Manager and the County Board of Commissioners.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualified applicants must possess a combination of education and experience that totals
8 years. Formal education includes any time spent in a trade school, college, or university. Experience must include at least
4 years spent:
- Delivering technical support to end-users, both remotely and in person.
- Supporting Microsoft Windows 10 and newer desktop environments.
- Assisting end-users with various computer applications.
- Operating audiovisual equipment such as web cameras, microphones, speakers, etc.

- Google IT Support Professional certificate
- IBM IT Support Professional certificate
- Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Foundations Certification
- Microsoft Office Specialist: Expert (Microsoft 365 Apps) certificate
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Fundamentals certificate
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate certificate
- Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) client support experience
Duties & Responsibilities
The Senior IT Desktop Specialist’s primary responsibilities include:
- Computer Hardware Support: Assist users with hardware issues, troubleshoot problems, and ensure that all components of the computer are functioning correctly. Install, repair, replace, and upgrade computers and computer peripherals such as keyboards, mice, monitors and docking stations. Coordinate the proper disposal of computer hardware.
- Common Operating Environment (COE) Software Support: Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair the Microsoft Windows operating system and other common operating environment (COE) software.
- Business Software Installation and Maintenance: Desktop specialists aren’t subject matter experts for business-specific applications, but they do assist users with installing, updating, and maintaining software applications on their computers, and may help users and application owners with software-related problems.
- Assisting with Network Connectivity: Help users connect to the county network. Assist with Wi-Fi connectivity and ensure that users can access shared resources on the network.
- Conference Room Equipment Support: Assist users with setting up conference room equipment for meetings.
- End-User Training: Provide training and guidance to end-users on how to use their computer systems and COE software effectively.
In addition to their end-user support duties, Senior IT Desktop Specialists:
- Work with other County IT resources to integrate new technologies into the end-user computer environment.
- Recommend standards for end-user computer hardware and software.
- Assist other areas of County IT by serving as their onsite “ears, eyes, hands and feet” when troubleshooting issues with other IT services.

Knowledge
Over time, you will develop a strong general knowledge of the county's computing environment and become a subject matter expert in your technical area. You will have a good working knowledge of the business functions of the various county departments and functional areas you support.
Skills & Abilities
You must have an attitude that's geared toward customer service. You should demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills and be able to present technical information using non-technical terms. You must be technically savvy and have a natural affinity for new technologies. You must balance changing priorities, easily shift between tasks, and have solid problem-solving abilities with keen attention to detail.
Work Environment
This job requires extended periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer. Normal work hours typically follow the county business day, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though this may vary on occasion to meet business needs. This position is currently permitted to work remotely one day each week, though you must be able to come onsite when needed or as directed by your supervisor. When onsite, your primary assigned work location will be in the Dakota County Administration building in Hastings, Minnesota.
