The City of San Leandro Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of City streets, parks, street trees, street lights, traffic signals, traffic signs, pavement markings, storm drains, buildings and mobile equipment. The City is seeking individual(s) who can perform skilled mechanical work as well as preventive maintenance tasks with limited supervision. The selected individual(s) will have a good understanding of the principles and practices of maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment; be able to operate a variety of hand tools and equipment; keep accurate records; and be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, Department staff and employees from other departments.

Position Definition: Performs skilled mechanical work in connection with the overhaul, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of heavy-duty diesel trucks, gasoline trucks, light duty trucks, automotive, public safety, refuse collection, mechanical equipment and performs related work as required.

Supervision Exercised and Received: Provides lead direction to lower-level staff. Receives limited direction from a section supervisor.Essential Functions: The functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.

Provides standard preventive maintenance for motorized equipment, including safety inspections, checking fluids, changing oil filters, rotating, balancing and replacing tires, providing lubrication to all working parts and tune-ups;
Conducts inspection of vehicle and equipment performance to determine if there are problems;
Repairs, replaces and rebuilds defective parts and returns the vehicle or equipment to operating condition, including rebuilding or replacing two and four cycle engines, replacing brakes, and complex hydraulic systems;
Follows all safety rules and protocols included in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program; takes appropriate action as required to identify and correct safety hazards and report safety concerns to his/her supervisor;
Communicates with other departments and individuals regarding problems with equipment and vehicles;
Welds, fabricates and assembles parts and equipment for City automotive, heavy equipment, public safety, refuse collection, and mechanical equipment;
Assigns the purchasing of equipment repair parts and materials; and,

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: High school diploma or certified equivalent (GED); additional specialized training in automotive mechanics or a closely-related field is highly desired.

Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible maintenance experience including repair and overhaul of a wide variety of heavy duty/automotive/machinery and equipment.

Licenses/certifications/other requirements: Must be willing to work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements; travel to attend meetings, seminars and conferences. Classification requires the possession and continued maintenance of a valid class "C" California driver's license for operating a motor vehicle.

Possession by the end of probationary period and maintenance of a Fork Lift Operator's certificate.

Possession and maintenance of ASE certification is highly desired.
