THE POSITION
The Police Chief reports to the City Manager and oversees all police department activities, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws related to public safety. As a key member of the senior management team, the Chief provides leadership, vision, and guidance to both the department and the community.
The city seeks a Police Chief who is visible, approachable, and dedicated to community policing. The ideal candidate will have strong relationship-building skills, experience in community policing and crime prevention, and the ability to collaborate with regional law enforcement. They should foster trust within the department and the community, maintain high ethical standards, and be capable of working in a high-performing environment with high public expectations. The successful candidate will possess excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, along with a proven track record of professionalism and integrity.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field (Master’s preferred); supplemented by a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible management experience in law enforcement with three (3) years at a command level; or any equivalent combination of education,training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver License, Florida Law Enforcement Certification (or be able to obtain within 120 days of employment); and graduate of FBI National Academy or similar command school preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
The City of NSB Police Department is a Tobacco-Free Work Place. Applicants for the City of NSB must not have been a user of tobacco products for at least six months immediately preceding an application for employment; and, if hired, must maintain non-use of tobacco products for the duration of employment with the City of NSB.
THE DEPARTMENT
Founded in 1926, the New Smyrna Beach Police Department (NSBPD) has grown alongside the city, now staffed by 66 sworn officers and 23 civilian employees. The department also includes a Parking Enforcement Unit with 9 civilian staff members. The NSBPD is led by the Chief of Police, supported by a Deputy Chief and two Captains overseeing Operations and Support Services.The Chief provides overall direction and collaborates with community leaders, while the Deputy Chief ensures day-to-day operations align with the department's mission. The Operations Division, led by the Operations Captain, focuses on public safety and community engagement, while the Support Services Division manages units like youth services, marine patrol, and animal control. The Administrative Services Division, overseen by a civilian manager, handles resources like records, equipment, and budget management.Led by the guiding motto “People First, Mission Always,” it reflects its commitment to prioritizing the well-being of its employees while unwaveringly staying true to its mission of ensuring public safety.
