An Animal Caretaker plays a crucial role in the daily operations of Missouri City Animal Services. They are responsible for providing quality care, support and engagement for animals under their supervision.
Examples of Work
**Animal Care:**
Feed, water, and administer medications to animals based on specific schedules and instructions provided.
Monitor the health and behavior of animals and report any concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
Clean and maintain kennels, cages, and other animal housing areas to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
Walk, exercise, and engage with animals to provide mental and physical stimulation.
**Record Keeping:**
Maintain accurate records of each animal's feeding, medication, and any special instructions.
Document any observed changes in behavior, appetite, or health status.
Assist in maintaining inventory of supplies, including food, medications, cleaning supplies, etc.
**Customer Service:**
Provide excellent customer service to citizens, including answering phones & inquiries, providing updates on adoptable pets, and addressing any concerns or requests.
Assist with Adoption appointments, Lost pet inquiries, impounding.
**Animal Handling and Restraint:**
Safely and skillfully handle animals during various procedures, including feeding, cleaning, grooming, and medical treatments.
Use appropriate techniques for restraint to ensure the safety of both the animal and staff.
**Grooming and Basic Medical Procedures:**
Assist with grooming tasks such as bathing, brushing, and nail trimming as needed.
Support shelter staff in basic medical procedures, such as vaccinations, wound cleaning, and administering prescribed medications.
**Facility Maintenance:**
Assist in the general maintenance of the facility, including cleaning and disinfecting common areas, equipment, and outdoor spaces.
Report any maintenance or repair needs to the appropriate supervisor.
**Compliance and Safety:**
Adhere to all relevant regulations, guidelines, and protocols related to animal care and facility operations.
Follow SOP’s & SOG’s to minimize risks to both animals and staff.

Education, Experience, or Certification
Strong knowledge of animal behavior and basic healthcare.
Ability to handle and restrain animals of various sizes and temperaments.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Physical fitness and stamina for tasks involving lifting, bending, and walking.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Previous experience in animal care or related field are preferred.
Any animal or veterinary certifications are welcome.

The role may require working in various weather conditions and may involve exposure to animal dander and cleaning chemicals.
Flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, may be required depending on the facility's operating hours.
