Description
The Deputy Fire Chief manages the Operations Division of the fire department which includes: fire suppression, EMS delivery, special rescue service delivery and hazmat response as well as carrying out all of the necessary duties of the Fire Chief during his absence.
Representative List Of Essential Duties And Responsibilities

- Coordinates with on duty shift commanders, EMS division and training division for operational readiness, training activities, special events and emergency responses.
- Responds to all structure fires, mass casualty incidents and any special operations emergencies.
- Oversees the Fire Prevention Bureau’s inspections, investigations and educational activities for effectiveness of performance.
- Coordinates the interface of the Training, EMS and Fire Prevention Divisions of the Fire Department with the Operations Division to maximize professional service delivery.
- Assures the record and report systems properly document the activities of the department and meet requirements of regulatory agencies, such as the Insurance Services Office and others.
- Coordinates with shift commanders on officer assignments for shifts and stations.
- Assists Fire Chief with overall planning and execution of department budget.
- Manages all fire department employees’ time and attendance.
- Reviews and develops Standard Operating Procedures and Guidelines for all Fire Department activities.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relations with municipal offices, fire department personnel and the general public.
- Participates in fighting fires and fire investigations.
- Establishes and maintains effective work relationships with others.

Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree (B. S.) and 12 years fire service related experience and training.
Certificates And Licenses
- State of Alabama Firefighter I/II Certificate.
- Valid driver’s license issued by the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
- Additional State of Alabama, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (NBFSPQ) certifications.

Language Ability
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, media and the general public.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract variables.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software and Spreadsheet software.
