The Gloucester County Planning & Zoning Department is currently looking for a Zoning Technician or Zoning Specialist to enhance our team. This role necessitates excellent communication and customer service abilities, a keen attention to detail, and a comprehensive understanding of the Microsoft Office Suite.
Under supervision, performs technical and administrative work for the Planning and Zoning Department. Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in ensuring compliance with the Gloucester County Zoning Ordinance and related land use ordinances impacting the issuance of permits. Employee must exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with public. Reports to the Assistant Zoning Administrator or Director of Planning and Zoning.Appointments may be made at the Zoning Technician or Zoning Specialist level depending on qualifications. Levels are distinguished by experience and/or certifications obtained. (Minimum qualifications listed below.)Zoning Technician ($42,854 +/- Depending on Qualifications)- Provides first line source of information for county development regulations and other issues.
- Provides technical assistance and information to citizens, builders, developers, architects and engineers related to permit applications.
- Reviews and issues zoning and other permits.
- May serve as secretary to the Board of Zoning Appeals, and be the first point of contact with citizens, attorneys, developer, contractors, etc.
- Answers routine correspondence and creates technical responses to approvals/denials of applications.
- Establishes and maintains a variety of files and records; routinely updates and maintains in accordance with established record management guidelines.
- Assists Planning and Zoning staff in the research of code violations and preparation of notices of violation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Answers routine correspondence and creates technical responses for approvals/denials of applications and zoning verification letters.
- Establishes and maintains a variety of files and records.
- Assists Planning and Zoning staff in the research of code violations and preparation of notices of violation.
- Serves as alternate secretary to the Planning Commission and assists in transcribing minutes, preparing agendas, and compiling supporting documentation for monthly meetings.

- Three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible administrative and customer service experience.
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications at the Zoning Specialist level.- Possession of an associate’s degree, supplemented by college course work in paralegal studies, criminal justice administration or related field.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible administrative and customer service experience.
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
- Certified Zoning Administrator (CZA), Certified Zoning Officer (CZO) and/or Certified Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) training preferred but not required.
- Successful Completion of the Certified BZA training expected within 24 months of employment.
