About the Position

Join our team of dedicated Medical Examiners within our N.A.M.E. accredited and state-of-the-art Medical Examiner's office.

 Medical Examiners in Maricopa County are charged by state statute with directing death investigations involving cases in the public interest, including those affecting the criminal justice and public health systems. Successful applicants will be expected to direct medicolegal death investigations and perform postmortem examinations in compliance with the National Association of Medical Examiners (N.A.M.E.) Forensic Autopsy Standards, document findings in narrative reports, take overnight calls from investigations staff, and offer objective consultation and/or court testimony to outside agencies, including criminal court officials and law enforcement.

 

Our Medical Examiners are assigned dedicated days for on-call coverage, exams, completing paperwork and court testimony, and teleworking.

The Office of the Medical Examiner is a county agency charged under Arizona Law to perform medical investigations of certain types of deaths. The goal of these investigations is to determine the medical cause (disease and/or injury) of the death to help improve the public’s health and safety. Our investigations inform families, the public and its agencies, and other community stakeholders in the hope that future deaths may be prevented. We are looking for individuals to join our collaborative team to provide compassionate service to the people of Maricopa County.

We Require

  • Graduation from an approved school of Medicine or Osteopathy
  • To possess or have the ability to obtain a current license to practice medicine in the state of Arizona, as required by the Arizona Department of Professional Regulations, upon hire

Job Contributions

  • Perform autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death and document written reports of findings supported by the medicolegal death investigation
  • Review items related to autopsies, such as hospital charts, medicolegal death investigator reports, law enforcement agency reports, and postmortem results
  • Investigate unnatural deaths by overseeing scene investigations and dictating findings from an autopsy
  • Serve as an expert witness in depositions, grand jury sessions, trials, and conferences with attorneys
  • Provide expert witness capabilities for all forensic criminal and civil actions associated with cases investigated and any other forensic needs within Maricopa County
  • Participate in conferences with family members, law enforcement, attorneys, and other individuals to provide information on investigations and autopsies
  • Provide training to forensic technicians, investigators, photographers, and other personnel assisting in the medicolegal death investigation
  • Write scientific papers and presentation materials

Working Conditions

  • Sufficient strength and physical and emotional stability to work under adverse conditions
  • Ability to work with decedents in a decomposed state and work in malodorous conditions
  • Ability to push/pull up to 100 pounds and lift up to 30 pounds
