General Statement of Job:
The Director of Corporate Risk Management (DCRM) provides leadership and has broad responsibility for the administrative and operational oversight, development, and implementation of strategies for enterprise-wide risk management and performance improvement. This position serves as a leader and collaborates with the Chief Risk Officer, Senior Leadership team, and Risk Managers on strategic planning, goal setting, department evaluations, and the implementation of strategic initiatives for the respective departments.
Essential Functions
The following are the major areas of responsibility for the director of Corporate Risk Management and include oversight, facilitation, coordination, supervision and technical competence in the following areas:
Risk Management
- Develops and implements goals for risk management that align with the strategic goals of the organization.
- Establishes and oversees the implementation of infrastructure for coordinated risk management programs across the continuum of care.
- Directs daily operations of the Corporate Risk Department, under the oversight of the Chief Risk Officer.
- Guides, supports, and educates staff in leading risk management and performance improvement initiatives across the institution. Hold staff accountable for the achievement of goals as determined by metrics.
- Provides oversight of proactive and reactive risk management activities including root cause analyses, failure mode effects analyses and Sentinel Event alerts in regards to the facilitation process, planning, implementation, and evaluation of effectiveness of process changes. Conduct debriefings when warranted.
- Leads serious safety events (including, but not limited to Root Cause Analysis, Failure Mode Event Analysis, and Event Summaries) and near-miss investigations and facilitates implementation of systemic improvements with senior leadership.
- Establishes a consistent and uniform approach to data collection and reporting of risk management metrics throughout the organization.
- Oversees reporting and communication of performance improvement initiatives across the organization.
- Supports regulatory compliance staff in preparation for accreditation and re-accreditation surveys and review of communication to external regulatory reporting agencies.
- Provides lead support to the Chief Risk Officer for Quality, PatientSafety and Compliance Committee reports, including development or support of meeting content and providing regular updates to the Chief Risk Officer and Committee on the overall progress of the risk management program.
- Pulls from systems reports and completes analysis and reports, as needed or requested. Continuously monitors reported events and near misses, follows up with Risk Managers, and escalates events, as necessary, to Chief Risk Officer.
- Leads development and maintenance of a strong culture of safetywith balanced accountability as described by the principles of Just Culture.
- Assists the Chief Risk Officer in providing leadership and guidance to risk management staff in goal setting, problem solving, resource management, professionalism, and professional development.
Human Capital
- Collaborates with Chief Risk Officer, Senior Management/Leadership, and Risk Management to address risks related to the organization's human capital, its most valuable asset, the work force, to reduce risks related to retention, recruitment, compensation termination, and medical staff issues.
- Coordinate strategy to reduce turnover, improve morale and topromote an organizational culture that supports patient/client/resident and employee safety.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to plan and coordinate a comprehensive program to prevent and reduce the incidence of employee work-related accidents or illness with or without lost time or injury.
- Interface with Human Resources Leadership who are responsible for Workers Compensation loss prevention and claims management.
Finance
- Provides assistance to Chief Risk Officer for budget purposes, up to serving as a budget manager for the Risk Management Department.
- Coordinates, advises and facilitates risk financing strategy with senior Management on issues that could financially put the organization at risk.
Technology/Communication
- Provides timely, meaningful communication to all levels of the organization as it relates to risk identification and loss prevention.
- Address those risks that arise from technology, machines , equipment, devices and tools, and methods of communication.
- Implement and/or administer/maintain oversight for the Risk Management Information System (RMIS), Safety Event Reporting System (SERS,e.g., RiskQual), and Patient Safety Organization (PSO, e.g., ECRI) in support of the Corporate Risk Management Program. Ensures contract and system maintenance for applicable systems. See Reporting.
Operations
- Oversight and collaboration with entities and Business Units within the district as it relates to the delivery of safe, timely, effective, cost-effective patient-centered care and services to clients/residents/patients.
- Interfaces and collaborates with Infection Prevention and Control and Quality Improvement activities to proactively identify and reduce or avoid clinical risks.
Strategic
- Risks associated with organizational strategy plans, business continuity, changes in delivery and risks associated with a changing healthcare environment, competition and consumer demands.
Hazards/BusinessContinuity Planning
- Risks related to disasters, physical plant, equipment, business interruption, adverse events caused by 3rd parties, protection of loss or reduction of value of assets. Maintains oversight for and compliance with BCP.Assists Chief Risk Officer with BCP testing and incident response and management.
Legal/Regulatory
- Works collaboratively with the chief Compliance, Privacy, and Risk Officer, Quality, Chief Medical Officer, General Counsel / Legal Services Team, Internal Audit, and other areas where risks associated with organizational failure or inability to comply with laws, regulations, statutes,s or standards might arise.
- Interfaces with Legal Services for potential compensatory events, claims, and/or cases.
Education
QUALIFICATIONS
- Clinical degree required (Registered Nurse, RN preferred). Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Administration or Business Management/Administration required.
- Master's or graduate Degree in Healthcare Administration, Science, or Business Management/Administration preferred. JurisDoctor accepted.
Experience
- Ten (10) years of experience in Healthcare Risk Management is required.
- Ten (10) years experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
- Experience in risk financing, including working with brokers, and insurance underwriters (preferred).
- Experience and knowledge with the enterprise risk management model/concept. Management and leadership experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of risk financing, insurance and claims management oversight.
Certification
- Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Certified Professional Healthcare Risk Manager (CPHRM) preferred.
Licensure
- Current Florida Driver's License is required.
- Licensed Risk Manager in the State of Florida required or obtained within one year of hire.
