Description

The Tourism Manager is responsible for all aspects of promoting Denison as a tourist destination by developing, planning, organizing, and overseeing tourism marketing and promotion programs to drive hotel and leisure sales and tax revenues. This role assumes and displays a leadership role in the development and execution of the long-term plan focusing on making Denison a premiere travel destination. The Manager works closely with the Main Street, Chamber of Commerce, Parks & Recreation and other community and industry stakeholders in all aspects of work. Oversees operation of the Discover Denison Visitor Center and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Create, manage, and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy to define and capitalize on Denison’s identity as a tourist destination that optimizes potential impact on overall tourism revenues generated in the City.
  2. Develop, implement, and manage short- and long-term strategic goals and performance measures for ROI tourism spending of the Denison Convention and Visitors Bureau.
  3. Provide staff support and leadership for the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) Board and provide communication between the CVB Board, City Council, City Manager, community partners and industry organizations.
  4. Oversees operation of the Discover Denison Visitor Center to include staffing, ordering and maintaining inventory and materials, promotional partnerships, and communication to guests of the Visitor Center. 
  5. Manage administrative aspects of CVB program including purchasing, record keeping, budget development and accounting and report preparation.
  6. Formulate and implement an annual marketing/business plan to develop and promote Denison to key target markets.
  7. Conduct appropriate research to ensure proper decision making in market, product development, and advocacy strategies and programs.
  8. Identify and market to local, regional, state organizations and recruit them to Denison for meetings and conferences.
  9. Coordinate marketing and tourism efforts with the Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Department, and Parks & Recreation.
  10. Coordinate group bookings with hotel management to negotiate rates, when necessary, for attendees.
  11. Develop and promote vacation and tourism packages to lure visitors to the area.
  12. Organize and meet with tourism stakeholders and partners on a regular basis to build effective relationships in support of overall strategies.
  13. Plan and prepare regular board meetings and provide financial, marketing and sales reports to the CVB Board, City Council, and City Manager.
  14. Work with community partners to create and develop tourism opportunities.
  15. Prepare and recommend to the CVB Board, City Council, and City Manager, an annual CVB budget.
  16. Represent the CVB at selected industry and community organizations and related meetings and trade shows.
  17. Attend state and national tourism conferences to stay current on trends and programs.

  9. Elicit community and organizational support for programs
  10. Create strategic and comprehensive marketing and tourism plans

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must have a sufficient driving record to be carried on the City’s insurance.
  • Prior marketing or advertising agency/production department work experience
  • Excellent organization, interpersonal, writing and communications skills with an exceptional grasp of the English language and grammar. 
  • Creative thinking for print and digital projects.
  • Ability to adapt in an ever-changing environment. 
  • Excellent computer skills including all Microsoft Office programs, with an emphasis on Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous attendance at TTIA Tourism College.
  • Bachelor's degree in advertising or marketing with three (3) years of comparable project management and agency experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
