San Bernardino County Fire Protection District is recruiting for Battalion Chiefs to perform complex fire service activities and difficult managerial and administrative work at a senior command level. Battalion Chiefs are responsible for a broad range of administrative and technical activities. In addition to commanding fires on-scene, typical activities include coordination of battalion personnel, budgets, and expenditures; managing personnel, discipline, and training; addressing and presenting at County, city, and community meetings; and writing complex reports.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Travel: Travel within and outside the County may be required. A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to hear in the normal audio range, without correction. Must possess the strength and stamina sufficient to lift and carry equipment and individuals up to 200 pounds and be able to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus. Vision must be correctable to 20/20. May be required to pass a color perception test.

Response Time: The Battalion Chief is assigned after-hours emergency response duty. During this duty, the Battalion Chief must be physically located within the geographic area of the assigned Battalion.

Other Requirements: Must successfully pass a background investigation and pre-employment drug test and meet the medical recommendations of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582 (Standard Medical Requirements for Firefighter). Must be able to perform under high stress situations and work in a variety of environmental conditions. Must maintain valid licensure as a Paramedic or EMT in California throughout employment, along with ICEMA accreditation.

NOTE: The selected individual will be an Exempt Safety employee and may be assigned to any geographic area of the County. Work Schedule may vary according to assignments and response required for emergency situations; may require out-of-county assignments for extended periods of time. Individuals in this classification do not attain regular status and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.

Minimum Requirements

Must meet the following requirements as of the filing deadline:

Experience: Three (3) years of fire service experience at the rank of Captain. Must be currently employed with the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District.

  • AND--

Certification: State Fire Officer Certification issued by the California Office of the State Fire Marshal and current CA EMT or Paramedic licensure (with ICEMA accreditation).

Desired Qualifications

SBCFD seeks highly qualified candidates who have demonstrated strong leadership abilities and possess excellent written/verbal communication and public relations skills. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess a college degree in Fire Science, Public/Business Administration, or closely related field, and Chief Officer Certification issued by the California Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Selection Process

Examination Procedure:

Candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be invited to participate in the exam process, which will consist of an Assessment Center, to evaluate candidate's knowledge and leadership skills, including problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and professional expertise. Assessments will include:

  • Written Examination
  • Simulation Exercises
  • Oral Examination

The written examination is scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025. The exam will consist of 50 multiple choice questions that cover the following areas:

  • Ops Directives
  • Incident Response Pocket Guide (IRPG)
  • Fire Scope Field Operations Guide (FOG)
  • Chief Officer Misc. Areas

Candidates must be successful with a passing score of 80% or higher in the Written Examination in order to be invited to the remaining assessment components (currently expected to be scheduled for the week of April 14, 2025), and must be successful with a passing score of 80% or higher in each component of the assessment/exam process in order to be placed on the eligible list. The top candidates on the eligible list will be invited to participate in the selection interview process.
