Role Description
The Fire Chief will be responsible for overseeing all fire department operations, including fire prevention, fire investigation, emergency management, and emergency services. Daily tasks include developing and implementing fire safety strategies, managing department personnel and resources, conducting fire investigations, and collaborating with other emergency services. The Fire Chief ensures the safety and preparedness of the community through effective leadership and strategic planning.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science or related field; seven (7) years fire service experience and five (5) years of administrative or supervisory experience in related role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Must possess certifications for Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazmat 472 (or equivalent) and Incident Command Education.
Must possess a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification.
Upon successful completion of probationary period, residency within a 10-minute response time to the City limits is required within 12-18 months.
Must satisfactorily pass a pre-placement physical, drug screening and criminal background examination.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for VHFD’s Fire Chief position is $124,000 - $149,000 depending on qualifications. The City offers a competitive benefits program including health and dental insurance options, life insurance, short and long-term disability coverage, 457 retirement match, and paid time off (PTO). This position participates in the PERA Police and Fire retirement plan.
