Description
Under general supervision of the Chief Building Official, is responsible for skilled technical work in the field of construction inspection of residential and commercial projects. Work involves the inspection of all areas of construction in a variety of projects completed by contractors for conformance with specifications, ordinances, and regulations. Work is normally performed independently and requires the use of technical judgment and discretion; however, consultation with a superior may be required on the more difficult and unusual cases. Performs other work as requested.
Examples of Duties
Performs inspections of construction projects in process for compliance with codes and plans.
Performs plan reviews prior to issuance of construction permits for adherence to City and State building codes.
Reviews and checks blueprints, plans, and sketches for proposed construction, alteration, or repair.
Confers with contractors, property owners, and other interested parties; explains and interprets construction codes, regulations, and specifications as well as City ordinances.
Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports; performs related clerical and recordkeeping tasks as needed.
Responds to inquiries and complaints whether in person or by telephone or written correspondence.
Attends meetings and seminars to maintain licensure.
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, supplemented by technical course work in the field of construction, engineering, or closely related field; three years progressively responsible experience in construction; or an equivalent combination of education along with training and experience. Building and Construction background is preferred. Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license and be certified by the State of Ohio, Board of Building Standards in two (2) or more fields of inspection. If certification is interim, must be able to obtain full certification within two (2) years of date of hire. Preferred certifications are Electrical Safety Inspector and Building Inspector and/or Residential Building Official.
Physical ability to perform inspections at the job sites.

Knowledge of materials, methods, practices used in various types of construction and of stages in construction when possible defects and violations may be most easily observed and corrected.
Knowledge of possible defects and flaws in construction, and of effective corrective measures.
Knowledge of the codes, regulations, and ordinances governing construction, alteration, and repair of residential and commercial improvements.
Ability to recognize conditions likely to result in defects in facilities and structures under construction.
Ability to research code compliance issues and to meet/discuss/resolve the issues with the utmost safety compliance in mind.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and blueprints, and to recognize deviations from such plans in the construction process.
Ability to explain, interpret, and enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with contractors, architects, property owners, co-workers, supervisor, and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
Health Insurance offered is a high deductible health plan (HDHP) and health savings account (HSA). Monthly premiums are paid by employees at 21%. Deductibles are $2000/$4000 (Single/Family). The City funds 75% of the deductible after successful probationary period expiration as approved by the annual budget.
