The Lead Necropsy Technologist will provide technical assistance for the veterinary staff of the Rollins Necropsy Laboratory. The incumbent will be under the supervision of a veterinary diagnostician who will give guidance in the overall duties and responsibilities. The incumbent will often work independently but will frequently receive instructions from other veterinary staff in the Necropsy Laboratory. The incumbent will have a variety of duties and will interact with a variety of people in the Rollins Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and with clients submitting animals to the necropsy laboratory. The incumbent must use mature judgement and discretion in dealing with people and their requests, be conscientious, dependable and perform duties in a timely manner. The incumbent must adhere to strict biosecurity practices as some of the animal pathogens encountered may also be infectious for humans. The incumbent must be physically and mentally able to work in a facility where blood, offensive odors and dissected animals are routinely encountered.

Job Duties

  • Manage workflow of necropsy cases under a variety of veterinary diagnosticians and pathologists and with the public.
  • Assist in the post-mortem examinations of animals.
  • Manage and maintain supply inventory.
  • Manage and maintain EQ in necropsy including troubleshooting problems.
  • Assist in training and supervise temporary student assistants.
  • Maintain QA practices by documentation, document control, and revising QA procedures.
  • Be the Safety Representative for the Necropsy section and manage hazardous chemical waste.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. We will not review resumes in lieu of the Experience and Education listed on the application.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Basic knowledge of animal anatomy.
  • Intermediate knowledge of veterinary-related services, animal husbandry, or lab animal services
  • Knowledge of laboratory or veterinary equipment, instrumentation and terminology.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to be able to physically and mentally be able in a facility where blood, offensive odors and dissected animals and birds are routinely encountered.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Excellent listening and oral communication skills

Management Preferences

  • Experience training and supervising others
  • Experience with a quality assurance program
  • Experience with maintaining and calibrating equipment and troubleshooting problems in the assigned area.
  • Ability to research and develop procedures and methods and ability to implement necessary changes
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Necropsy experience

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.

Bachelor s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution; or associate degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory; or Completion of a Certified Laboratory Assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and three years of experience in a medical laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
