Definition:

Under the general supervision provided by the Sustainability Manager, plan, develop, coordinate and manage the implementation of economic sustainability strategies identified in the City’s Sustainability Plan and Climate Action Recommendations Report, and the program elements related to those plans. This position will focus on sustainability initiatives in the business and commercial sectors, including the bilingual Sustainable Business Program and supporting activities; engaging and building trust with local businesses, business groups, and educational institutions to identify opportunities for collaboration and advance sustainability goals, with a focus on opportunities that are equitable, inclusive and representative of the Longmont community. In addition, this position will aid businesses and entrepreneurs in implementing sustainable practices, identifying and addressing barriers to existing resources, supporting the development of additional resources as needed with particular support for small and BIPOC-owned businesses, and identifying and responding to potential impacts to businesses from climate change. The position requires coordinating with and providing support, resources and expertise to other City department and division representatives, local and regional sustainability groups, advisory boards and community groups, other diverse stakeholders to achieve sustainability goals and objectives.

Principal Duties:

·         Leads the planning and development, and manages the implementation of designated sustainability strategies and related activities in accordance with the goals, objectives, targets and timeframes outlined in the Sustainability Plan and Climate Action Recommendations Report. 

 

·         Effectively tracks participation, community support and feedback, cost savings, and general sustainability metrics for designated programs; analyzes and evaluates data to determine program effectiveness and refines programs and activities as needed to achieve sustainability goals and objectives in an equitable way.

 

·         Utilizes the City’s equity tool to evaluate designated programs, policies and activities to identify and address potential barriers to participation and access to benefits by multiple communities to ensure that sustainability programs, policies, and services equitably serve under-resourced populations and those disproportionately impacted by climate change.

 

·         Communicates goals, activities, and achievements of designated programs to City leadership, City Council, boards and commissions, community partners, businesses, the public, and other audiences through presentations, written reports and analyses, workshops, training sessions, and other methods as needed or requested.

 

·         Supports sustainability-related engagement and partnership activities with city employees, residents, businesses, community partners, diverse sectors of the community, and others as applicable to designated programs, with a focus on opportunities that are equitable, inclusive and representative of the Longmont community.

 

·         Researches and maintains a working knowledge of best practices in sustainability that are appropriate and equitable for Longmont’s diverse community to address sustainability in the public and private sector, and incorporate concepts and lessons from those efforts into the Sustainability Office.

 

·         Develops, maintains and updates policies and procedures, including budget management, for designated programs.

 

·         Supports senior staff with the development of strategic program planning and goal setting for the Sustainability Office.

 

·         Coordinates and facilitates staff and community teams and meetings as needed to develop and implement effective and equitable program strategies and policies.

 

·         Participates in sustainability planning activities and other city-wide planning, project, policy and program development efforts across departments to provide sustainability direction, support and expertise, integrate sustainability concepts and goals, and encourage/identify opportunities for cross-departmental collaboration.

 

·         Actively establishes positive working relationships, cooperation, trust and partnerships with city staff, coworkers, residents, associations, and other community partners in service to the effective and equitable achievement of sustainability and organizational goals.

Working Environment:

Work is generally performed in a standard office environment. Will require some evenings and weekends. Ability to sit for long periods of time. Ability to communicate using telephones, presentations and through interpersonal communication. Frequent use of technical office equipment including personal computer, document preparation equipment, and telephone. May involve the ability to move 15 -20 pounds, mobility through diverse work environments. Must be able to effectively communicate with others to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.  Mental requirements include frequent reading of documents, use of confidentiality, problem solving, detailed work, math, reasoning, verbal and written communication, customer contact and multiple concurrent tasks.

Qualifications:

In this position, we are looking for a minimum of 8 years of combined education and/or experience. This can include related professional experience in sustainability, community development, planning, environmental sciences, social sciences, environmental economics, business, finance or economics with sustainability emphasis, engineering, policy or management, public administration, or related field. Course work or experience in environmental economics, statistical analysis, communications, business and economics, or public administration are desirable. Special Qualifications: Bilingual (English/Spanish) Advanced proficiency required.
