Description
Reports to the Chief Building Inspector or designee, enforcing local, state, and federal building regulations. Conducts technical field inspections to ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code and Broward County Amendments. Reviews and interprets permits, plans, and specifications to ensure the protection of property, life safety and general welfare of the public. Performs mandatory inspections of new construction and alterations, approving, disapproving, or issuing correction notices. Coordinates with contractors, architects, engineers, and city departments to ensure regulatory compliance. Investigates complaints regarding alleged code violations, issue Notices of Violation, and recommends corrective actions. Conducts audit inspections of Private Providers and documents progress through the inspection portal. Ensures adherence to the Building Mandatory Inspections program and job site safety protocols, including NPDES Best Management Practices. Participates in Rapid Impact/Damage Assessment deployments after wind or flood events. May conduct annual inspections of businesses and government buildings with more than duplex housing. Performs after-hours and emergency inspections when requested by BSO and PBFD. Utilizes various software applications and hardware tools to complete assigned tasks. Maintains certification through mandatory continuing education programs. Assists in developing administrative guidelines and performs related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
Education & Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certification by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals (Chapter 2, Section 201.2 (A)).
- Certification by the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board as a Standard Inspector within one year of employment.
- Must be licensed as a Design Professional or Certified Contractor or obtain the license within one year of employment.
- FEMA NIMS certification up to level G-400 is required.
Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of combined construction experience and at least two (2) years of construction experience in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone or two (2) years of statewide experience and passing the BORA HVHZ exam.
- A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong understanding of building construction materials, methods, and construction stages for code compliance.
- Knowledge of the Florida Building Code, building standards, laws, and ordinances.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints accurately.
- Familiarity with mapping and basic engineering principles.
- Ability to navigate various cloud-based software applications.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to enforce laws, codes, and regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
- Excellent organizational, prioritization, and multitasking skills in stressful environments.
- Capable of leading, delegating, and reviewing the work of others.
Physical Requirements & Work Conditions
- Possession of a valid Class E driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations and maintain accurate records.
- Active position requiring the ability to see, read, talk, hear, and handle objects/controls.
- Physical capabilities include light lifting (up to 10 lbs., occasionally up to 20 lbs.), standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, and reaching.
- May be temporarily exposed to noise, odors, poor weather conditions, and hazardous job sites.
