Position Summary
The Division of Emergency Management Internship Program is designed to provide an opportunity for select Emergency Management (EM) students to gain real-world experience, and engage with local, State, and Federal partnering agencies. This program is specifically structured to focus on the intern's professional development over a six (6) month term; better preparing them for future employment opportunities and a successful transition into the EM field.
The general focus of this program follows the four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. These selected interns will assist the Division with a variety of program initiatives and special projects. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City.
This position is an Essential classification and will be required to report to duty before, during, and immediately after a civil emergency.
Essential Duties

- Assist with projects relating to public safety and emergency planning for all hazards.
- Aideingrantapplicationsubmittalsforvarious mitigationprojects.
- ContributetotheDivision’sOutreach&EducationProgrambyassistingwiththedevelopmentofpubliceducationalmaterialsforcommunitypresentationsandoutreachactivities.
- Support the design and maintenance of emergency public information and notifications systems (e.g., Alert St.Lucie, SharePoint, WebEOC, City facilities paging system).
- Support the documentation and training of emergency management staff and City personnel using SharePoint and WebEOC systems.
- Assist in the planning, development, and tracking of resources for the annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo.
- AssistinfacilitatingtheDivision’sTrainingandExerciseProgramforCitypersonnelandresidents.
- Providers, research, and administrative support in creating and updating emergency management plans (e.g., Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP); Continuity of Operations (COOP); and the Emergency Management Strategic Plan).
- Attend local and off-site committee meetings with EM staff to establish a professional relationship with community partners (local, State, and Federal) supporting City mitigation, response and recovery efforts.

Education And/Or Experience
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required.
- Current enrollment at an accredited college or university, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration: Emergency Planning & Management or Public Policy & Leadership is required.Applicationsfromcandidateswhohavegraduatedfromeitherprogramwithinthepast6 monthswillalsobeaccepted.
- Good academic standing with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 is required.
- A letter of recommendation from the college or university program department head or professor (facilitating or instructing in one of the above listed majors) is required.

- Possession of valid Florida driver’s license and maintenance of clean driving record required.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
