This is a full-time position that will be responsible for trail maintenance at Eagle Creek Park, under direction of the Trail Manager. Incumbent will work directly with park volunteers, providing: guidance, supervision, technical expertise, and manual labor during volunteer projects. The position requires heavy-lifting, the ability to work in all weather conditions, and a basic knowledge of local flora and fauna.
Position Responsibilities
Works with the Trail Manager to prioritize projects and identify time frame, schedule, and budget.
Inspects the condition of park infrastructure and reports to park management, offering technical advice when applicable.
Supervises and coordinates group volunteer workdays for trail maintenance and other park improvement projects.
Calculates materials lists for proposed projects and creates purchase order requests; assists in grant applications/management. Monitor and track project's progress and handle any problems that arise.
Assists the Trail Manager in replacement of trail bridges, steps, and work to improve basic trail infrastructure.
Creates program props and exhibits for the environmental education program.
Use and maintain tools & equipment to the highest safety standards, consulting with the department Risk Manager, as needed.
Obtain training in herbicide application, chainsaw safety, CPR First Aid, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
Use knowledge of photo editing software to design trail maps and displays.
Create and maintain project documentation, plans and reports. Prepare yearly summaries of work progress, goals, and needs.
Interact with the community committees and other assigned committees and boards as requested by supervisor.
Assist with environmental programs and field trips.
Follow all Indy Parks and Recreation Policies and Procedures.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Studies, and/or related field preferred. One (1) year of related work experience may be substituted for each year of formal education. Applicant must have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to supervise volunteers of all ages and abilities. Applicant must provide examples of self-motivation, and be skilled in effective time management. Successful candidate must have a valid Indiana Driver's License and be willing to get further certification, if needed. Fieldwork will include with use of hand and power tools (i.e. chainsaws, brush cutters, augers, herbicide sprayers, etc.). Job requires lifting (up to fifty pounds).
Independent Judgment
Established policies and procedures control actions. Incumbent is required to exercise occasional independent judgement when there are no available policies and procedures. Errors in judgment may cause inconstancies and inconveniences as well as regulatory and budgetary problems. Ability to recognize the need for intervention with any aspect of the program and to notify the immediate supervisor accordingly is critical.
