Position Description

The City of Signal Hill has a vacancy for the Parks and Recreation Commission to serve an unexpired term through May 31, 2029.

The recruitment will close on Monday, April 14, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Candidates will be notified of their application status 
and receive a confirmation of the interview date no later than Thursday, April 17, 2025.
 
Commission interviews and appointment will be conducted at the regular meeting of the Signal Hill City Council on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at 7:00 p.m.

This is a part-time essential volunteer position with the City.  The commissioners receive a monthly stipend in recognition of their service.


The Signal Hill Parks and Recreation Commission consists of five Signal Hill residents appointed by the Signal Hill City Council.  Each serves a four-year term.

Example of Duties

The Parks and Recreation Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council and the Administrative Officer.  The Commission interprets the citizens of Signal Hill's leisure-time needs, facilities, and services and recommends general policies concerning all parks and recreation properties, facilities, plans, programs, and activities.  It evaluates suggestions, criticisms, and comments in light of such policies.  It recommends long-range programs for the improvements, acquisition, and development of parks and recreation facilities and the extension of services.  The Commission shall perform such additional duties as may be designated by the City Council by ordinance or resolution. Compensation is $75 per meeting.

The Commission meets the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. to address Commission business.

Minimum Qualifications

To serve as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age or older; and a registered voter and resident of the City at least 29 days prior to the date of appointment.  Commission members shall continue to reside in the City for the duration of the term of office (Signal Hill City Charter Section 602).

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

A Commissioner shall attend all Parks & Recreation Commission meetings, whether regular or special, except for good cause.  If a Commissioner knows they will be unable to attend a meeting of the Commission, the Commissioner must contact the Commission Secretary prior to the time established for commencement of the meeting.

No additional benefits are provided to City Commissioners or Committee members.
