Summary

The City of Lynnwood is now hiring multiple general laborers for seasonal/summer work!  These are General Laborer openings within the Public Works department -- helping with Spring and Summer projects!

Seasonal Utility workers will help Maintenance Worker 1s and 2s with basic utility maintenance including water and sewer repairs, hydrant flushing, valve turning and vegetation control. 

Seasonal Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) work offers the opportunity to learn multiple different skills ranging from outdoor power tools used for landscaping to rebuilding pumps. The majority of work will be landscaping, but we are happy to help you build your skillset in anything we do at a WWTP.

The General Laborer position performs a variety of semi-skilled utility maintenance, wastewater treatment and street and/or stormwater duties. This position utilizes hand and power tools and operates light vehicles.  This position is within the Public Works Department and works under the supervisory direction of the Supervisor, Foreman or Lead Worker.
 

Essential Functions

Includes but is not limited to such essential functions as listed below:

  • Digs ditches, holes and trenches; assembles simple plumbing arrangements and assists in installing pipelines under the direction of regular staff.
  • Clears debris and plant matter from streets and utility sites and prepares surfaces for work.
  • Operates, cleans and carries hand and power tools including jack hammers and power washers.
  • Shovels materials including dirt, debris and landscape materials; assembles simple plumbing arrangements and assists in installing pipelines under the direction of regular staff.
  • Prepares asphalt areas for repair and shovels and rakes asphalt.
  • Flags traffic and ensures safety of street crews and the public.
  • Installs pavement markings.
  • Assists in spreading and finishing concrete and asphalt work.
  • Assists in operating catch basin cleaning equipment.
  • Cleans work areas, tools and clears brush.
  • Paints buildings, fire hydrants, pavement and other objects.
  • Assists in operating utilities equipment. 
  • Locates flushes and operates utility infrastructure.
  • Performs routine maintenance on City vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs routine data input and research.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old, knowledge of operation and maintenance of hand tools, knowledge of construction techniques and possess a valid Washington State Drivers License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Prior experience in construction is preferred. Must obtain flagging and traffic control certifications at earliest convenience.

Job Location and Equipment Utilized:
Work is performed in an outdoor environment, with exposure to seasonal heat, cold, and extreme weather conditions.  Exposure to traffic noises, bad odors, traffic fumes and other traffic hazards.   Equipment utilized includes jack hammers, weed-eaters and power tools.

Require Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the use and operation of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Required Physical Traits:
  • Able to lift and carry heavy objects at least 80 lbs; climbing, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, reaching, crouching, turning/twisting, pushing and pulling, reaching overhead and above the shoulders, standing for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to speak and hear to exchange information.
  • Manual dexterity to operate small power equipment and hand tools.
This is a temporary, non-benefitted position.
