Performs skilled technical work inspecting building construction for compliance with building codes, issuing stop work orders when necessary, maintaining records and files and preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Senior Building Inspector.

Essential Functions
Performs field inspections and re-inspections of residential facilities for compliance with state building codes and County ordinances.
Receives complaints in regard to defective construction and handles enforcement problems.
Inspects existing buildings for hazardous conditions, structural failures or improper uses.
Issues warnings and stop work orders where construction is not being made in compliance with regulations as to methods and/or materials.
Answers questions from private citizens, contractors and builders; communicates with contractors and homeowners about code issues and violations.
Reviews plans to determine compliance with codes.
Testifies in court on code violation cases.
Makes reports and keeps records regarding inspections.
General knowledge of all types of building construction materials and methods, and of stages of construction when possible violations and defects may be most easily observed and corrected; general knowledge of state building and related codes, laws and ordinances; ability to detect poor workmanship, inferior materials and hazards of fire and collapse; ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints accurately and to compare them with construction in process; firmness and tact in enforcing ordinances and codes; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, building owners, contractors and the general public.
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in the building construction trade, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of or ability to acquire certification at Level I in four fields as required by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualifications Board within two years of employment.
Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
