The King County Medical Examiner's Office (KCMEO) is seeking a part time, temporary Associate Medical Examiner to work 1 day per week from July 1 to December 31, 2025. This position does not come with benefits. The goal is to provide one day per week of additional support to the office for 6 months. KCMEO operates under the administrative authority of Public Health - Seattle and King County and has been a National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) accredited office since 1978. The office is located within a facility situated on the campus of Harborview Medical Center near downtown Seattle and was built to KCMEO specifications. KCMEO serves all of King County with a population of 2.27 million and geographical area of 2,131, square miles. This position will be filled by a licensed medical doctor who has or will have completed their forensic pathology fellowship by the beginning of July 2025, and who intends to sit for board certification in forensic pathology in September of 2025. In addition to performing complete forensic autopsies and views, pathologists testify in court and depositions, provide consultation for families, law enforcement, and attorneys, and participate in teaching medical students and residents. There is the opportunity for clinical faculty appointment in the University of Washington Department of Pathology, and pathologists are encouraged to conduct scholarly activities. KCMEO has a forensic pathology fellowship program accredited by ACGME and conducts weekly educational conferences that are accredited though the University of Washington School of Medicine.

This is a great opportunity for someone who will be completing their forensic pathology fellowship by July 2025 and who intends to take their forensic pathology boards in September 2025 to work part time in a NAME accredited office gaining additional experience and starting their career. King County has areas that are urban, suburban areas, mountain passes, a national forest, lakes, and the Puget Sound. This means that we have diverse cases. Staff at the office are very dedicated to the work, and to working collaboratively. The office has fellows, residents, medical students, and undergraduate interns and is very much a learning and teaching environment. We have collaborations and connections with multiple organizations.

Job Duties

Under the direction of the Chief Medical Examiner:

  • Perform medicolegal investigations and autopsy equivalents (autopsies plus views) and complete reports according to NAME standards.
  • Work one day per week.
  • Testify in court and perform depositions and provide consultation for criminal justice agencies and families.
  • Participate in educational activities for fellows, medical students, and residents.
  • Supervise fellows on some cases.
  • Review and approve disposition authorizations and non-jurisdictional reports
  • Participate and moderate weekly CME conferences
  • Attend rounds on days you are working

Required

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Washington State Medical License and Washington State Driver's License or ability to obtain prior to hire.
  • Medical Doctor with a board certification in anatomic or clinical pathology
  • Either have completed or will complete forensic pathology fellowship by July 2025.
  • Have the intention to take boards in forensic pathology when next offered (September 2025).
  • Attitude and ability to practice in accordance with the Mission Statement of KCMEO and practice guidelines of National Association of Medical Examiners.
  • Documentation of current BLS CPR certification with AED training required at time of job offer. CPR/AED Heartsaver courses do not meet this requirement.

Work Schedule

Medical Examiners typically work 7:30 to 4pm, Monday through Friday, and on Sunday morning of the weeks on which they are on call. This position will work one day per week, to be determined through coordination with the Chief.

Work Location

This position will be at Harborview Medical Center, 908 Jefferson St. Seattle, WA 98104.

Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
