Senior Center Manager

Job Description

To plan, organize and coordinate a community recreation programs and events for senior adults, including cultural arts, physical activities, health activities, human services, and special interest classes and programs at the Bob Gilmore Senior Center and Lions Club Park Center under the general guidance of the Associate Director of Recreation Services.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Direct supervision of four (4) employees and a complex arrangement of volunteers and volunteer organizations.

Essential Duties

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Works within the facilities to implement a meal program for senior citizens.

Works with the City Council appointed Senior Advisory Board to coordinate activities/programs for senior citizens. Serves in the capacity to run/manage this advisory board in conjunction with other assigned recreation services staff.

Coordinates cultural celebrations.

Coordinates holiday celebrations.

Drafts annual operating budget and works with the Associate Director of Recreation Services and the finance manager to finalize document(s) for submission.

Drafts and finalizes weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports summarizing senior activities.

Implements annual operating budget to ensure compliance with city policies and procedures.

Ensures expenditures are done in compliance with approved budget and do not exceed available funding.

Draft and finalize contractual agreements with individuals / agencies to provide services to senior center members.

Plans, organizes and coordinates the development and implementation of community recreation and human service programs for senior adults.

Organizes and supervises classes, workshops and activities for senior adults engaged in recreation programs and co-sponsored programs.

Surveys leisure interests and needs of senior adults. Selects, plans and implements cultural arts, physical activities and special interest leisure and fitness activities for adults.

Responds to public inquiries about senior adult programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings.

Prepares for publication a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, flyers, and related communications regarding senior adult programs.

Coordinates, schedules and maintains related records and statistics for programs and personnel at the Bob Gilmore Center and the Lions Club Park Senior Center.

Attends meetings and events on behalf of the senior center operations and facilities.

Works with various city committees as deemed necessary by the Associate Director of Recreation Services.

Schedules and runs various tournaments throughout the year for a variety of activities such as, billiards, bridge, etc.

Provides information and referral services for a variety of social services available to senior adults in the community.

Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, making arrangements for rental and use of

building, helping set up tables and chairs for classes, etc.

Coordinates the planning, organizing and implementation of senior adult activities.

Promotes interest and provides information regarding senior adult programs to community leaders,

recreation officials, community service groups, other departments, and the general public.

Solicits and secures sponsorships for senior center programs / activities.

Interviews, hires, and trains employees.

Coordinates budgeting and accounting functions for the Senior Citizens' Program(s).

Attends conferences as necessary/applicable to professional growth and knowledge.

Non-essential Functions

Assists in the recruitment and selection of part-time and seasonal staff.

Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education And Experience

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation, geriatrics, social work or a closely related field; and
  • Two (2) years' experience working with senior citizens; and
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience; and
  • One (1) year recreation experience; or,
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Affiliation with Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS) and/or the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).

Necessary Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of recreation philosophy, planning and administration;
  • Considerable knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program;
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment;
  • Skill in First Aid and CPR;
  • Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of paid staff and volunteers.

Supplemental Information

Special Requirements

Must have a valid driver's license by date of hire.

Must have a valid Texas Driver's License within 6 months of hire.

First Aid, CPR, and AED certification within 6 months of hire.

Personal computer, including word processing and data base software; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; typewriter, and automobile.
