The Tax Technician is responsible for supporting the administration of the City’s tax programs, including sales and use tax, lodging tax, retail marijuana tax, and other fees. This role includes processing tax returns, performing reconciliations, and maintaining accurate records. The position emphasizes excellent customer service by assisting taxpayers with licensing and return inquiries. The technician also supports the Sales Tax Manager by performing data entry and reporting, conducting limited fieldwork, and serving as a backup for other roles in the division.

JOB SUMMARY

  • Process and review tax returns for all applicable City taxes and fees for accuracy and completeness.
  • Respond to taxpayer inquiries regarding licensing and tax return requirements via phone, email, and in-person.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of tax-related accounts, identifying and addressing discrepancies.
  • Maintain and update tax records and databases with return and licensing data.
  • Assist with business licensing, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and ordinances.
  • Conduct limited fieldwork to identify unlicensed businesses and verify compliance.
  • Support taxpayer education initiatives, including providing resources and guidance on filing requirements.
  • Assist with initial use tax mailings and follow-up on delinquent accounts.
  • Serve as a backup for the Admin Tech and A/P Accounting Clerks as needed.
  • Assist with operational reports and statistical summaries as directed by the Tax Manager.
  • Assist with collection on delinquent accounts and outstanding A/R balances.
  • Process senior sales tax refund applications.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not supervise other staff but collaborates with team members and provides support to ensure efficient operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Associate’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field strongly preferred. Minimum two years’ related experience in accounting or business required. Bookkeeping experience preferred but not required.

Must possess valid driver's license and good driving record.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, interpret, and communicate tax laws and regulations effectively. Strong skills in preparing reports and correspondence. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Proficiency in performing accurate calculations, including reconciling accounts, percentages, and data entry.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Strong analytical skills to identify issues and recommend solutions.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs, including Excel and Word.
  • Ability to learn and utilize tax-related software systems.
  • Knowledge of municipal tax codes and compliance practices.
  • Professional and tactful interaction with the public.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
Primarily an office environment with occasional fieldwork. While performing fieldwork, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and typical of an office setting.
