WORK LOCATION: South Treatment Plant, 1200 Monster Road, S.W.. Renton, WA

JOB SUMMARY: The responsibilities of this classification include performing a wide variety of highly skilled technical and journey-level duties to design, construct, maintain, troubleshoot and modify computerized systems, electronics, pneumatics, hydraulics and related instrumentation. This position requires the use of analytical skills in implementing various aspects of process control.

Job Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Troubleshoot, repair and maintain all plant control systems (computer, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic).
  • Use considerable knowledge of chemistry and physics to analyze industrial processes in troubleshooting and repair of process control instrumentation. Use this same knowledge base to design new controls and implement modifications to existing control systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair distributed control systems (DCSs) and programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Use applied electronic theory, digital electronics and proportional integral derivative (PID) control strategies to implement program changes to DCSs and PLCs.
  • Update technical and program documentation. Determine appropriate inventory of spare parts for critical instrumentation.
  • Review blueprints, work orders and shop drawings to facilitate coordination of maintenance efforts.
  • Assist in inspection of instrumentation installed by contractors. Witness and asses loop commission testing.
  • Work with operations personnel, engineers and suppliers to explain the functioning of processes and procedures needed for the operation of new equipment.
  • Provide on-the-job training for new and subordinate personnel.

  • Knowledge equivalent to three years of journey-level experience in a related field such as instrumentation, electronics
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics
  • Knowledge of electronic/electrical circuits and instrumentation test equipment
  • Knowledge of physics and chemistry
  • Knowledge of PID control loops
  • Knowledge of soldering techniques
  • Analytical skills
  • Communications skills (oral and written)
  • Computer skills
  • Skill in using electrical and electronic test equipment
  • Skill in safely operating power tools and using customary hand tools
  • Skill in effectively troubleshooting equipment using limited documentation
  • Skill in working in harsh environments and in emergency situations
  • Skill in designing or modifying technical publications and instrument/electrical drawings
  • Skill in applying codes and guidelines in the design, installation and maintenance of all plant instrumentation
  • Skill in working safely around electrical, mechanical and environmental hazards
  • Skill in working well with others

Supplemental Information

Licensing / Certification Requirements

  • Washington State Driver's License
  • Completion of an apprentice program, or two years of technical schooling, or the equivalent related experience
