Base pay range

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14 Wastewater Resource Recovery Facilities, sludge dewatering facilities, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates, etc.), wastewater laboratories and harbor vessels. The collection system includes 497 sewer regulators, 152 miles of intercepting sewers, 96 pumping systems, 3 CSO storage facilities, and 3 aeration facilities.

The Process Support & Compliance Section is responsible for ensuring the regulatory compliance of SPDES (State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permits, Consent Orders and reporting requirements. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following;

  • Performs data analysis and data management tasks related to wastewater process metrics
  • Participates in site visits to wastewater resource recovery facilities and assist in sampling & monitoring efforts
  • Assists in research and experiments to improve the efficiency of the wastewater process operations
  • Collaborating with managerial and IT staff on the development, testing, and utilization of systems to improve program implementation and management in Office 365.
  • Contributes to the optimization and updating of water quality information management systems

Minimum Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.

Preferred Skills

  • Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at the undergraduate level majoring in environmental engineering, civil engineering, or chemical engineering. - Student must have at least a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) - Student must have at least a junior class standing Selection Criteria: - Strong writing skills - Effective interpersonal skills - Research capabilities - Familiarity and/or experience with computers/software MS Office 365 - Leadership skills - Self-motivation - Ability to work well with minimal supervision - Interest in the environment / wastewater treatment
