General Functions/Distinguishing Characteristics

The employee occupying this position is responsible for grounds keeping and the care and maintenance of the City’s recreational grounds, fields, parks, and rights-of way.

 

The Groundskeeper is a seasonal position and is expected to assist the Grounds Maintenance Foreperson in the normal day-to-day activities.   Work is normally done manually or with the assistance of equipment.  Tasks will vary; however, each particular task is generally of a highly routine nature and performed according to readily available standards and guidelines.   Tasks performed outside the normal routine are received orally or in writing.  

Essential Functions & Duties

  • Performs grounds maintenance work to include grass, tree, flower and grounds maintenance, and the maintenance and repair of signs, park and playground equipment, sidewalks, and fences.  Maintenance work also includes painting as needed.
  • Repairs, replaces and maintains park, sports field and playground equipment and facilities to assure safe conditions for users.
  • Responsible for safe work practices and the use of personal protection equipment.
  • Operates riding and push lawn mowers and small tools to include chain saws, grass and weed cutters, and power hand tools.
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of tools and equipment, and the safe operation of vehicles, tools and equipment.
  • Performs general cleanup of grounds by removing rocks, brush, debris and other materials; collects and disposes of litter and empties trash receptacles as needed.
  • Loads and unloads equipment from trailers or light trucks. Transports equipment to and from various work sites.
  • Performs other related general maintenance work as assigned by the ground's maintenance foreman.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Personal Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. 
  • Valid Alaska driver’s license with acceptable driving record. 
  • Ability to operate equipment and use tools in a skillful and safe manner.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions. 
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work. 
  • Ability to work as a member of a team working towards a common goal.  
  • Ability to multi-task to perform and manage multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements for the position.
