We are searching for an individual who is committed to upholding the law and adjudicating cases fairly and efficiently. Our ideal candidate should possess strong legal skills, good judgment, decisiveness, a high level of personal integrity, patience, and excellent people skills.

The purpose of the Court Commissioner - Judicial and Family is to conduct preliminary court proceedings in family, small claims, criminal, civil, and traffic cases for Sauk County.

Essential Duties

  • Conduct temporary (initial) hearings in family law cases including divorce, legal separation, child custody, child support, paternity and maintenance.
  • Conduct final hearings in divorce, legal separation, domestic abuse, and child support cases.
  • Conduct review hearings in protective placement cases.
  • Mental Health Review Officer for Minor Outpatient Mental Health Treatment, Wis. Stat.
  • 51.14
  • Sauk County Hearing Officer for Administrative Hearings, Wis. Stat.
  • 51.35.
  • Conduct initial appearances in traffic, civil forfeiture, ordinance violation, small claims, and criminal cases.
  • Provide oral and written information to parties involved in family law, traffic, and small claims cases.
  • Direct County Family Court Counseling Services including referrals to mediation in contested child custody and placement, and orders for custody studies.
  • Coordinate the processing of family court litigation in Sauk County (both pre and post judgement) to ensure efficient resolution of cases.
  • Manage operation of Pro Se Family Law Clinic.
  • Prepare and present annual budget.
  • Determine scheduling of appropriate court proceedings.
  • Write orders, memoranda decisions, and judgements.
  • Sign court orders and documents.
  • And other duties as assigned.

Required Working Hours

Standard working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. Please note these hours are subject to change and additional hours may be needed or required. Compensation for additional hours beyond normal working hours are subject to applicable state and federal regulations.

Minimum Training and Education

Required

Licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin

3 years family, criminal, or civil law experience

Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
