The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is currently seeking a Park Ranger I. The Park Ranger I will be responsible for maintaining park security by patrolling (unarmed) and greeting visitors to City recreational facilities. Â This position will enforce city codes and act as the first point of contact and educates visitors on the use of recreational facilities.

Department Starting Salary: Â $42,629 - $44,760

Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

Â

  • Provides information and appropriate assistance concerning department programs (recreation, parks, or open spaces) and related facilities to include recommending and identify natural resource problems; assist with developing solutions and implementing projects for natural resource protection and rehabilitation and preparing sites for reserved group activities and events.
  • Protects parks and open space ecosystems, including vegetation and wildlife.
  • Patrols recreation, parks, open spaces, and other jurisdictional locations for the purpose of preventing, detecting, enforcing violations of laws, educating and informing the public; explains and interprets applicable codes and pertinent regulations; objectively handles a wide variety of public contact situations.
  • Performs investigations into complaints and incidents in recreation, parks, or open spaces.
  • Addresses difficult or contentious issues in a constructive manner.
  • Plan, design, prepare and present interpretive, educational, informational and community outreach programs to the general public.
  • Assists other public safety agencies when necessary.
  • Provides crowd and traffic control coverage at special events and assigned activities.
  • Responds to emergencies and medical situations at parks and open space locations.
  • Drives a City motor vehicle, bicycle, or ATV to travel to or patrol parks and open space locations.
  • Participate in court proceeding including testimony and evidence presentation.

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Six months experience in a related field.

Preferred License(s) And/or Certifications(s)

Experience in law enforcement, military, or park operations preferred.

  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of hire.
  • Current certifications in First Aid and CPR/AED or ability to become so certified within 6 months following hire.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications in ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 or ability to become so certified within 6 months of hire.
  • Appointment as a City of Norfolk Conservator of the Peace/Special Police Officer and successful completion of department required training within 12 months of hire.
  • Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) as approved by the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) or ability to become so certified within 24 months of hire.
  • Currently certification as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) as approved by the Virginia Department of Health Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) or ability to become so certified within 36 months of hire.
  • SAR-TECH III (Search and Rescue) Certification obtained within 36 months of hire.
  • Two years of experience in park management, recreation, natural resources management, security, public safety, military, development or delivery of programs that interpret natural, historical, cultural or recreational features.

Work Hours:Â Sunday - Saturday. Â Hours vary, flexible schedule required

Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing. Â
