TRANSPORTATION AND PLANNING INTERN - Transportation & Mobility JOB SUMMARY:Under general supervision of the Mobility & Special Projects Manager or other designated supervisor, provide technical and administrative support to the Transportation & Mobility and Development Services Departments. Assist with research, data collection, writing, and mapping for relevant policy and planning initiatives. Perform other related work as required.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Provide technical and administrative support to the Transportation & Mobility and Development Services Departments. Provide assistance with transportation and urban planning projects in a timely and effective manner, including research, data collection, writing, and copy-editing. Conduct research and prepare reports or presentation materials regarding current, relevant planning topics of interest to the City. Prepare maps for reports and presentations utilizing ArcGIS software. Assist with content updates to the departments’ webpages. Conduct field reviews which may include traffic, bicycle, and pedestrian observations and digitizing collected information into tables, maps, or reports. Take photographs or compile free-use images from online sources for use in reports and presentations. Attend concept meetings to discuss development proposals with property owners, developers, engineers, architects, real estate agents, attorneys, and other professionals in the development industry. Attend department/staff meetings and public meetings, such as meetings of the City Plan Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment, Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and City Council. Communicate courteously and effectively in the English language with other employees, citizens, developers, and elected and appointed officials. Clearly distinguish colors and details on exhibits, maps, plans and other graphic representations. Read and interpret maps, plans, and documents. Prepare maps, plans, and graphic presentations electronically and make corrections as needed. See and hear well enough to work safely in traffic and construction sites. Work predominantly in an office environment with occasional outside work to conduct field surveys, take photographs, etc.OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:Keep assigned work area and equipment clean and in safe condition. May work evenings and weekends depending on assignments and project requirements.REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:College student preferred at the undergraduate or graduate level pursuing a degree in urban planning, public administration, political science, or related field. Transportation and/or urban planning courses preferred.EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:Must be able to take and follow verbal and/or written instructions effectively. Must be able to communicate courteously and effectively, both written and orally. Experience required with Microsoft Windows-based computer software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience in ArcGIS preferred. Ability to take quality photographs preferred.
