Traffic Systems Technician - Full Time

JOB SUMMARY:

Under direction, assist engineers in managing and operating the Advanced Traffic Management System for the Traffic and Transportation Department. Conduct analysis for traffic control devices. Operate computer software to analyze, evaluate, and update traffic related databases and signal timing studies. Perform other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Work independently troubleshooting traffic signal timing and operation complaints. Collect and analyze data for traffic studies, signal progression programs and other traffic control devices. Assist in the design and implementation of traffic related improvements and traffic signal system programs. Maintain and configure signal cabinets in the shop for testing purposes. Troubleshoot field devices and serve as intermediary between engineers and field technicians to resolve reported issues. Read documents and computer screens. Communicate courteously and effectively in English with the other city employees, officials, and the public, in person, in writing, and by telephone.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Perform other related departmental duties involving transportation, engineering and planning. Assist other departments with projects as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:

Associate Degree or two years of college, in an engineering or science discipline is required. Five years of field experience in Traffic Signal maintenance, construction, and operation may be substituted for the Associate degree. IMSA Traffic Signal Level III Certification is preferred; IMSA Traffic Level II Certification is required. Texas driver’s license, Class C, required.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:

Five years of related transportation experience is required in addition to the required Associate Degree or work experience substitution. Experience required using Windows based computers and Microsoft Office software programs. Must have knowledge of and the ability to use networked computer systems and engineering related software. Must have the ability to analyze and interpret engineering data, perform mathematical calculations, and interpret engineering plans and specifications. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Must display good decision-making skills. Must be able to function as an effective team member.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Carry, drag, hold, lift, pull and/or push up to 50 pounds of equipment. Walk, climb, crawl, drive, kneel, squat, stoop, and/or twist while installing and maintaining traffic equipment. See and hear well enough to work safely in traffic and construction situations, using proper safety precautions. Work indoors and outdoors in adverse conditions, such as extreme cold and heat, and with temperature swings; work in varying conditions including heights and noise. Some extended hours and shifts required.
