Job Responsibilities

Located in the southern Santee Delta region, Hampton Plantation State Historic Site is home to the remote, final remnants of a colonial-era rice plantation. The plantation now serves as an interpretive site for the system of slavery and rice cultivation in the region from the colonial period through the end of the Civil War. The property also tells the story of the freed people who made their homes in the Santee Delta region for generations after emancipation.

Job Purpose And Duties

Under general supervision, administers, operates and maintains a State Historic Site. Performs duties governed generally by broad instructions, objectives, and policies as defined by the agency. Involves choice of action within broad guidelines for a variety of conditions and problems.

  • Effectively train and supervise full-time staff and direct activities of seasonal employees.
  • Develop, update and implement resource management plans consistent with department policy and the site's mission.
  • Assure that all facilities, equipment and property including historic resources are maintained to the standards set forth by the department. Work to provide a safe environment for park visitors and employees.
  • Practice and promote teamwork within the State Park Service, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.
  • Employees will be required to live in designated park housing to provide for security, safety, and emergency response.
  • Perform all required administrative functions to include: inventory, revenue collection, property accountability, accurate and timely reporting, all in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.
  • Performs functional relationships and continued to improve public relation activities, educational and recreational activities as required. Enforces park rules, regulations and policies within his/her authority.
  • Manages volunteer services and programs to support the mission of the park.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Master's degree in Public History, American History, Museum Studies, Historic Preservation, or a related field and one year experience at historic sites or museums, or an equivalent combination of education and training.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with historic preservation, museum practices, and curatorial experience preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Position requires medium to heavy lifting, bending, walking and standing on uneven terrain, crawling and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents, and other materials used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. Works with office equipment such as computers, calculators, etc. Under general supervision, administers, operates and maintains a State Historic Site. Performs duties governed generally by broad instructions, objectives, and policies as defined by the agency. Involves choice of action within broad guidelines for a variety of conditions and problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The ability to work independently and direct subordinates as required. Knowledgeable of park operations to include maintenance and administrative functions.
