RECREATION LEADER (PART-TIME)
Hourly Rate: $20.10 - $24.43
This recruitment is to fill positions the following part-time seasonal summer positions:
- Beach Boat House (Equipment Rentals) - One Position: Assist with rentals of kayaks, stand-up paddle boards (SUPs), and various beach equipment. The position will involves moving, lifting, and carrying equipment. T
- Library (Summer Reading Program) - One Position: Assist with the Summer Reading program, leading activities and crafts.
These positions play a vital role in promoting community engagement and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations for the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. Under general supervision, the Recreation Leader assists in planning and facilitating recreational programing activities for various age groups, including children, teens, adults, and seniors. The position receives general supervision from designated program supervisor and may lead and provide limited supervision of work groups for some assignments.

Essential Functions And Basic Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs administrative tasks such as answering telephones, completing paperwork, and maintaining program documents.
- Responds to inquiries and concerns from the public and program participants.
- Assists with administrative and financial tasks, including processing program registrations and facility reservations, managing customer bookings and facility rentals, maintaining attendance and registration records, processing refunds, creating and maintaining program files, and ensuring a positive customer experience throughout the reservation process.
- Plans, organizes, monitors, and/or instructs activities, programs, and services, which may include children, teens, adults, and seniors.
- Communicates effectively with supervisor regarding participant behavior, injuries, and other relevant matters.
- Conducts program/room set-up and breakdown; Ensures equipment and facilities are properly prepared, maintained, and safe.
- Provides exemplary customer service to all individuals.
- Collaborates effectively as an essential team member, demonstrating flexibility, cooperation, and open communication to foster a positive and cohesive working environment.
- Promotes recreation program activities and facilities; assists in the preparation of departmental materials.
- May serve as the primary point of contact at the front counter to patrons of the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department.
- Responsible for answering questions and addressing concerns related to department programs, services, and facility rentals.
- May work irregular schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Serves as a liaison and representative of the City with the community, organizations, and professional groups as necessary.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this would be:
Education and/or Experience
- One year of work or volunteer experience in recreation programs and/or customer service, preferred.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
License or Certificate
- Possession or ability to obtain a valid Community First Aid and CPR certificate within six (6) months of employment start date.
- Possession or ability to obtain a valid California Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

- Provide instruction and guidance to program participants.
- Facilitate a variety of recreational programs and activities.
- Demonstrate use of program materials and equipment.
- Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
- Operate and use standard office equipment including computers and applicable software.
- Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.
- Interpret and explain City policies and procedures.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the general public, contractors and organizations.
- Publicize, promote, develop, and implement recreation programs for a wide variety of public interests.
- Compile information and maintain records.
- Ability to speak Spanish is not required but preferred.
