Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, transportation planning, or a related field or four to five years of comparable work-related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)/ Engineer in Training (EIT) certification preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Time management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to attend and present at public meetings or hearings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and a functional knowledge of transportation and engineering-related software is preferred.
  • Knowledge of or experience with transportation planning software (CUBE) is preferred. Familiarity with MUTCD, AASHTO, and other VDOT standards, specifications, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of land development principles and practices.
  • Current valid driver's license and good driving record are required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, the record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by the applicant and presented at the time of the interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of the interview date. 
  • Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.

Duties

Transportation is seeking a dynamic and motivated engineer. As an integral member of our transportation management team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to developing and implementing solutions that enhance our transportation systems' safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The successful candidate will assist multiple internal departments and external agencies with engineering and technical assistance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in researching, analyzing, and evaluating transportation projects and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and transportation planners to develop and implement innovative solutions to address transportation challenges.
  • Participate in designing, planning, and implementing transportation infrastructure projects like roadways, intersections, and public transit systems.
  • Assist in conducting traffic studies, data collection, and analysis to inform decision-making processes.
  • Engage with community stakeholders, government agencies, and other relevant partners to gather input and support for transportation initiatives.
  • Perform other work as required.
