Performs managerial and supervisory work of considerable difficulty in the planning, coordination and administration of the City’s fire suppression rescue, prevention, inspection, and investigation service programs. Performs related work as required.
Responsibilities
Plans, organizes, develops, and coordinates all fire department service work activities.
Evaluates departmental objectives, setting mission and goals to determine work activities.
Supervises the department and is responsible for the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of subordinates’ work.
Plans and assigns work based on departmental goals and priorities.
Serves as City’s spokesperson regarding fire department activities.
Takes command at major fires.
Directs and reviews the development and presentation of training program for fire personnel.
Recommends and develops plans for the expansion of facilities and service.
Prepare studies, reports and recommendations concerning the fire service.
Prepares specifications for and recommends procurement of supplies and equipment. Monitors use of supplies.
Prepares annual budget for department.
Authorizes and make purchases while staying cognizant of budgetary guidelines.
Cooperates with the community and officials of other jurisdictions on matters of mutual interest.
Advises on and directs the enforcement of laws, ordinances and regulations relating to the prevention and control of fires.
Conducts pre-fire planning activities and devises and implements improved methods of operation.
Stays abreast of current trends in the fire service, attending conferences and seminars.
Assists in the investigation of cause, origin, and circumstances of fires in the city.
Plans and conducts presentation and educational opportunities for schools and civic organizations, and community groups concerning fire prevention practices.
Maintains records of complaints, fires, and investigations.
Attends City functions, City Council meetings, etc., as required.
Works on special projects as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management or Public Administration
Minimum ten (10) years firefighter officer experience in Texas and possess Master Firefighter Certificate as required by the State of Texas
Valid Texas driver license
Must have driving record sufficient for coverage by City’s auto liability carrier
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management or Public Administration
Certification in ICS-300, ICS-400
Fire Service Chief Executive Office Certification or equivalent
